Gear Lust Part 7

so sick, i gotta try something dub technoish thing next.

@knobgoblin 7/4 on a first jam is wild, i love it. definitely have not even scratched the surface of that feature but been using that FX amp envelope as a sidechain/compressor on everything

hard to believe both of those are just syntakt!

here’s a very lazy 1 take, just fucking around on a pattern with mutes. still gotta get a handle on pattern chaining / song mode and the full potential of p/cond locks, etc, but so far it’s more intuitive than i thought it would be.

It sounds cool but I feel like I’d need a calculator to dance to it.

Yo these clips are sick.

Syntakt is a really cool box, just enough to get things done, not too much to get bogged down with endless options

Been fucking around with my Electribe EMX-1 the last few months at the psych ward, it’s surprisingly capable when it comes to sound design, but of course extremely tedious to program since it’s over 20 years old.

That it has 128 step patterns is pretty insane though, didn’t the Electrons just get that like last year lmao?

You can hack this further by turning the tempo down to 35 BPM (140 divided by 4) to make extremely long patterns, then add a synced delay if you want faster hihats or whatever. Less direct control and lower res syncopation possibilities ofc, but pretty cool that it’s even possible.

deeply regret not getting one of those like 10-15 years ago when they were dirt cheap

I got mine new when it came out, still works as it should.

Those were sick. I had a friend that was big on the old school electribes, super cool machines.

Yeah, Elektron only moved to 128 step for the Digitakt2/digitone2 and Tonverk has 256. In practice it’s a lot more than that because each track can have its own time scale, length and trigger conditions. I did a track recently where I set a track to the lowest multiplier and used all 256 steps to record a slow melodic part, worked essentially like a linear recorder that only did one cycle over the course of the full song.

lol I beat the shit out of an electribe because the midi clock crashed and it didn’t save the knob settings. The little output screen just says err07 when you turn it on now. Piece of fucking shit, I put it in hell.

Yeah that scaling thing is pretty cool tbh. But the EMX-1 still does (the equivalent of) 512 steps with that hack lol. I’ll prolly get one of those Elektron boxes eventually just for the sequencer though, it’s sooo much easier to work with.

Kinda wanna try to make some Memphis trap with that hack, barely need any syncopation for that.

I kind of like simplifying asdr to a delay (no feedback) and filter. Like put that on a 2D touchpad with a sustain pedal and you could like, play the drums. Put like dub box delay on 1 knob for the release with your free hand.

I always thought it was weird that ableton doesn’t have a notch filter. But then I remembered I could never get the notch filter to sound worth a shit in protools. I was like, am I just a bad engineer or does this always sound harsh or just kind of shitty but passable? Nah, ableton is actually just really good engineering.

But like now I run subtractive notch schemes on dual baselines for texture and micro harmonies and sparkle the shit out of the track.

Wait actually I lied, sort of. I do divination on a monophonic bassline so it acts like sum 2 and makes a spectral image.

This thread may be cool for you syntakt nerds

i always forget the typhon can just act like an fx box…i still have mine hooked up, might have to have a play around later today..

The Dreadbox synths are slept on imho.

Posting here cause the actual music threads are dead and it kinda applies as it’s a groovebox jam

Live take from the stereo outs of Tonverk
