Production Thoughts

Learning how to use the hardware is just like learning an instrument imo. There’s obvious differences and benefits/ limits to both but I think you know what I mean

i have gotten out of the habit of using long samples for “texture” (or whatever), by getting the same kind of thing using a quiet noise layer from a midi controlled synth or drum machine. It’s easiest if you actually do it with a plugin; and I am not referring to White/Pink from a noise oscillator. The reason I like doing it this way is because you can take the midi data of another channel and just duplicate it; so the noise can be aligned and re-triggered with the same rhythm of any other part. if you want it to, anyway. Normally I am using one of my “Drummer” plugins as generator.

Was listening to Dr Dre and got pretty stoked on brass samples. Might go in that direction.

Nah I wanna actually spot and catch good sounds while out, then go back (preferably night-time, low traffic, etc.) and sample a 10-60 seconds long drone on my Zoom H2n or H6. Got some really good ones the last few weeks, been keeping one of the Zooms in my backpack.

I was at the beach today & sampled waves hitting the jetty. There was some walloping low frequencies crashing down there. Im not sure if my phone captured it well. I FRICKING LOVE PRODUCTION

Get a tascam if you’re into field recordings

I’ve been looking into getting a zoom or tascam. Can’t quite decide. It looks like tascams are more sensitive to interference

My H2n is impossible to hold in your hand, because the resonance to the mic from your hand’s movements ruins the recording kinda. It’s great just to place on a solid ground to record ambience though. There are a few brands that makes good portable recorders, I’d say Zoom is a good one, even if their devices feel pretty plasticy. I’ve been using the H2n and H6 for years, and the quality of the recordings are very good. Just some stuff with them that nags me.

I’m trying to choose between the zoom h1n and the tascam dr-05x. They both seem solid. They’re reasonably cheap, and my birthday is coming up so was going to ask my family to get me that.

I’m sure either would be totally fine, though the tascam does have some interesting features.

I think the Zoom H1 models are much better now than when I looked at them last time. All of my DJ sets on Mixcloud have been recorded on the H6, all of my piano jams on Soundcloud have been recorded with the H2n. Very useful devices, but I haven’t tried the other brands, so maybe there are better ones if you look at build quality, etc.

EDIT
Audio-wise the recordings are excellent on my Zooms.

I heard some advice to buy a camera stick for the Zoom recorders. I haven’t looked into it yet and I don’t really know what they are. I have a Zoom H6.

So you wanted some samples eh @Tolsof ?
Here’s the latest ambience recordings I’ve done with the H2n.
removed because I don’t wanna share it anymore
My last DJ set (and every previous set I have uploaded) was recorded on the H6.

I feel like it’s a more organic way to collect samples when I have the recorder with me and just record the stuff I think is cool, but you are free to come with suggestions on what would be interesting too.

I did buy a little tripod for my Zoom.

Got the bonus packs for both of mine. Dead cat wind shield for both, tripods, some other things. Need to find those. In a box somewhere.
