Production Thoughts

my point is that direct recording of this sound will not represent itself the same way on a speaker, it needs processing

all eqs use phasing hardware or digital, the digital just recreates the ideas from the hardware eqs

the example is one that is not EQ’d

vs one that is

and we go run circles around again…

you are litterally describing

if A is A
and B is A+C

do they equal eachother?

NO obviously they dont equal each other, but if you dont actually describe why difference is meaningful, or what the parameters of the thought experiment is even about it is absolutely pointless.

no I’m arguing why EQ’ing introduces artifacts

so in the choice of unaffected transients vs as natural as possible transients and in an abstract sense natural pitches

combined in the context of a whole mix

it means natural as possible wins out - for clearity, harmonics wise etc

no youre fucking not dude! you’re argument is that it does, duh! It changes the source. No one ever will argue that a source vs eq’d source is the same

ffs lol

please point out where you have not just put that point forward as the bottom line of this debate

and please lets just remove the whole speaker aspect from it

No i’m saying which one is best

best for a mix
best for speaker representation
best for clearity
most easily perceived

the word “best” is for fucking idiots tho

it shuts down ‘the question’, what might work best for this problem right now?

okay so an other analogy

if i stood next to you i could produce a super quiet drum-ish sound - that you would be able to hear and feel - like the tiniest clap or whatever

if i were to represent that same super quiet sound in a mix - i would have to remove other sounds and probably exaggerate that sound for it to have the same effect

which makes it a question of abstract fidelity

there’s more choice in the first scenario
ultimately choice that we try to progress towards in scenario two - even pragmatically

but scenario one has more possibility
theres a higher level of fidelity and therefore a more nuanced level of clearity

which means if you tried to translate that to the concept of a mix - then clearity wins out

you work towards setting up conditions where the highest level of nuance, fidelity and clearity is attainable

that is not analogous at all to what i responded to

try to think about the last edited bit above

it is super abstract, but the ideal condition is an ideal
its not about pragmatics

I have to go to bed, its way too late now lol

These G’s trying to compress my ideals. Trying to Equalize my opinions into pragmatisms.
I’m a transient, let me pitch.

I think this where your logic starts to disintegrate tbh when it comes to ‘sound’, a ‘mix’ what is a mix? its a combination of sounds mixed together for an applied reason.

As someone who has worked in film sound design, recording bands, my own production, live sound, mastering/mixing, before, a mix in that realm means something drastically different, than just trying to make a track, or even a dj mix, or a church audio mix, or really anything.

A huge part of my job doing sound design for film was making someone putting their fork down on a plate sound “real”, a door opening on the left side of the room? Making that translate has a lot more to do with our brains and conditioning than our ears, and absolutely 100% of the time i never thought about transients or compression or “smearing”. I focused on the parameters of the mix i had to make.

The actual object of the conversation is INTENT. No technicalities, no speaker cones, no binary yes or no.

If the intent of the mix is to make someone’s tiny sound gestures relevant then that is important, it shouldn’t really be also judged alongside a mix that is designed for a club or a movie, or whatever the fuck it is.

Going to just really finish this nerd-off and say, tools are tools, learn how to use them, try using them, learn when to use them, and then fucking get on it with it. If someone says a certain tool is just bad, listen to them, and reflect back on your own use of them.

soz for starting an argument fellas

Get smeared

Been spending most of the day trying to get into the Renoise workflow. Have had my license for years, but never properly made use of it. Chopped some mono 8-bit Amen and made a 2 minute jungle drums workout with a one shot chord pad and sine sub, turned out pretty nice.
