First Trip Hop Tune in 2 years. I tried to incorporate more sampled instrumentation than I usually do with this track. Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.
Beauty. Samples are sounding nice. Good mix.
This is cool man. This mix on this really nicely done. Sick samples/sound design as well.
Arrangement: 9/10
Im baked and i keep trying to pay attention but i get lost in the sound. So pretty easy to say you nailed it. Transitions were perfect and the energy built nicely, sounded good the entire time.
Sampling: 6/10
I didn’t really hear a ton samples in this tune. Not that it necessarily needed them for anything, but its just so foreboding and moody that it might give it some edge to have a sampled quote or cut from a tv show or old brooding jazz song. As far as percussive sampling it sounded like you had a couple of interesting hits in the drum rack. Interesting (guitar?) twang going throughout the tune ( 0:56) and horns (1:01) i thought those were good touches. Maybe some ambient sampling could give this a good layering effect, like distant wind, rain drops, some whispers. Random ideas can yield some solid results surprisingly. didn’t like the wood hits with 1/16 echo permeating repeatedly through out - those things fucking rape the EQ you have to negatively-EQ them and then turn the volume down just to not instantly hear them when they start and stop. (3:10 example) good effect but its sooooo loud
Sequencing: 9/10
Great sequencing on your melody line combining so many elements to make a great flow. The sound design also played a good part there but the consistent sequencing is a big part of bringing that together. Drum kit has a nice slow but steady feel. not much to say here.
Synthesis: 7/10
I give you praise for making such a dynamic melody with all the parts you used, but as far as synthesis and processing goes i didn’t really hear anything crazy, but i guess with this type of tune its not really expected. Also didn’t really hear any differences in processing throughout the tune. You don’t gotta keep your synths at the same settings, try automating filter sweeps or anything really to give it an evolving feel, and keep it fresh. Pretty much same story on the drums. I think your initial idea and direction is good, but the processing needs some work. The kicks aren’t really felt, and kind of feel flat, and the cymbals override the momentum of the melody at points. Just trying to give some constructive criticism, and take it with a grain of salt cause i rarely follow my own advice. Speaking of which, i made a tune that this one reminds me of. Id love to hear your feedback on it since you made this and there similar-ish!
