The key centres and progressions of early techno did not necessarily conform to what had previously been popular, from a Western theory perspective. Parallel transposing of chords to create rhythmic “melodies” for example, as was typical in early UK rave music.

It was a product of the limitations and functionality of early samplers I guess. Instead of sampling all kinds of different chords, you go for, say, just a minor one, since there was such limited storage capacity in early digital gear. Then you just transpose it up and down and BAM, playing chords with one finger instead of having to learn how to play. Hardware synths did this too, like the Chord Memory function on the Korg Poly-800.
