What am I hearing

In this track, how are they making the growl that fills in the breaks at moments like 1:15-1:17?

I’ve only tried techniques with serum, but I’m wondering if it’s something I can achieve in this synth or if I need to dive into FM8 in order to get there. Right now I’m basically making your standard growl and then going from there, playing it around c-1 and fucking with the filter movement. Getting to the texture of the sound is the hard part, not so much the vocal movement. Is it external processing maybe?
