I’ve never actually checked or counted bars to see if this is true, because I don’t want to ruin the magic, but to my ears it seems like Commodo just adds elements wherever they are most vibey. Like there’ll be a little 1/3rd bar transition, or switch, that doesn’t adhere to the grid or time signature. A short tom drum roll that isn’t on the grid, but sounds vibes af.

It’s like he sees structure as something to be actively fucked with. Does that make sense?

It’s very structured imo, I was thinking the exact opposite when I listened to the tracks yesterday. Gonna have a few more listens though.

I think maybe structure is the wrong way to describe it.
It sounds very off-gird, unquantized, organic, moving, alive.

Yeah, totally, but the sections are very well measured up. Which is what I thought you were getting at first. Lots of off-grid rhythms and wonky floaty melody runs that makes it hard to place which key it is in.

Yeah like… making a song. Not a “beat” adjusted for DJs, necessarily.
Mixed meters and half bar breaks into a new section is quite common in all genres, except for a lot of electronic stuff. Just do what fits the song innit?

Also, fuck yeah @swerver , I really like his direction lately. More real bass and guitar. Very inspiring.
