Another good one
SHTOOKA VISION
According to chatgpt, the title of the song is in tamazight, and translates to “I yearn to sleep with you”. Given the context, I think its pretty accurate lol.
Song’s a banger
This is mad. Cant get my head round it!
I think he kind of does a shit job of explaining it tbh. I mean, not shit, but just not the best explanation.
It’s kind of like a blues shuffle, but instead of the shuffle being from the off beat moving to the down beat, it’s the down beat moving to the off beat. Or kind of like jazz, they swing the down beats.
So instead of the blues: Bump, buh-bump, buh-bump, buh-bump
It’s like: bump-buh, bump-buh, bump-buh, bump-buh
He also focuses on the big 4 beat aspect, rather than the 3 beat aspect. People clap both ways during the performances, but (depending on the song and the part of the song) clapping in 3 actually seems more common.
It’s hard to not zone in on the bass notes tho. I still get off beat sometimes. The shtooka vision on i just posted is hard for me to follow
Full disclosure, i dont really know what this means either
Hmm, alright
It’s kind of like a tresillo rhythm, like in a lot of dance hall and Latin music, with the snare a quarter note before the 2nd kick, and then a beat after
But swap the kick and the snare
Im really curious how this rhythm is taught by natives. I mean, obviously if you grew up with it you’ll be familiar with it just like we are with 4 on the floor, but even with that understanding we break it down and come up with little explanations for how the beat works.
I wanna try and figure out a better way of explaining this music that doesn’t take a fucking degree in calculus to understand
sorta going on a tangent, but since you mentioned dancehall, check out this compilation, early raï with 80’s dancehall production values, might be up your alley
Fuck yeah dude
