New Gradient Lab sample pack for free download! This one goes deep on the Roland U220 rompler from 1989. Loads of great 90s lo-fi stuff for jungle, dub and anything else in between.
Monster load of free samples - foley, ambience, machinery, room, noise etc
are you guys on all the free Tokyo Dawn Labs and Acustica Audio plugins already?
cuz if not you should be
EDIT: acustica website doesn’t link properly for some reason, go to acustica-audio dot com/plugins and
scroll down 90% of the page till you see the “free plugins” section
top points in my books to TDR Kotelnikov, Nova, SlickEQ & Acustica Arctic
there’s also a free version of Acustica’s Sienna room studio headphone simulation which is supposed to make headphone mixing more accurate, comes with two fully functional rooms and eq curves for a bunch of headphones, just has less content than the paid ones. Not really sure I can confirm how effective a method it is although I’ve heard that people do feel that kind of software makes a significant difference in how well their mixes translate if you only use cans. worth a go anyway
they make great paid plugins too but no reason not to grab these
Voxengo makes lots of great free utilities too although I assume most have seen these around by now (SPAN spectrum analyzer, Stereo Touch & Sound Delay, Mid-Side Encoder, there’s even a manual latency compensator if you’re running something that doesn’t report latency to the host properly)
I have that and Molotok.
Also p sure I have SlickEQ but havent installed it yet.
Had a look at the Acustica stuff but it really pisses me off when you have to sign up to their site AND download a plugin manager AND log in to that. SO many fucking hoops to jump thru I cba
Not a fan of plugin managers tbh.
yeh I agree actually, only reason I suggest is cause they have a pretty good selection of free things and some of them are quite nice to use. but I dislike that they seem large and bloated, need yet another software manager to install, and some are relatively cpu heavy. they also seem really heavy on buzzwords like “vibe” and “magic” instead of just explaining what each control/process does concretely and in a straightforward way. speaking of clunky software managers and eyeroll sales tactics I’ve nearly given up on trying to run Waves plugins at this point. thankfully the Arturia, iZotope, Softube and IK Multimedia ones haven’t given me much trouble (altho the Arturia stuff I also find a bit clunky and slow to update sometimes but their shit is bananas ofc so ykno) but sometimes it’s like how many software managers do I need to be running?
definitely a bigger fan of the plugin producers like TDR and Kazrog that are putting out really great sounding stuff for very reasonable prices (or free!) that’s easy to run and install, and putting more time into giving detail about how things actually work. Fabfilter isn’t cheap but they’re basically the bread and butter of what I use for most standard processes if I want accurate and predictable (not necessarily clean)
definitely tempted to pick up the TDR Slick EQ M and the paid versions of Kotelnikov and their Limiter 6 plugin … all seems to be very highly rated in places like gearspace too which is always a really good sign
I need to do a serious clear out of all my plugins. I have so many but rarely use more than a handful.
yeh have been doing the same for probably obvious reasons lol… have a really bad plugin hoarding habit
actually a bit off topic for the free stuff thread as it isn’t - tho there is a free demo version, just annoying to use - but I recently invested in DDMF PluginDoctor and it’s been really cool to have visual confirmation of EQ curves, harmonics, etc and see how different plugins actually behave because I realized I was using some in ways that I wouldnt now, knowing more about how they actually affect the signal, and on the topic of clearing out and simplifying plugins it’s also been helpful for comparing the performance of different things and seeing what I’d rather keep
Lofi chorus VST free until June 5th
luv nova, use it extensively
yeah the TDR stuff is shweet, been liking it more and more
very slick (no pun intended) plugins
just got Addictive Drums and have been making my own breakbeats from scratch and playing with Kotelnikov as a really clean and precise compressor for snare transients that are way louder on some hits than others. actually much more important piece of kit when dealing with relatively acoustic or humanized audio that varies in peak compared to single hit samples etc
even tho its still just programmed but actually does have pretty realistic variance in peak levels
@Harkat wanted me to upload some obscure German Sonic the Hedgehog cd from 1996 I had found at my parents place years ago. Figured other might enjoy it as well so here’s a link:
Fwiw you can find it on youtube where the main track has around 5 million views etc so it’s not as insanely obscure as I initially thought. But alas, it’s yours for free in WAV quality. Think of it as happy hardcore / euro dance for kids.
Also, here’s a folder with random sound fx from an old Norwegian pc game called “Kaptein mus og skattejakten” which translates to “Captain Mouse and the treasure hunt”.
Should tell The Wizard to rip his Smurf Hits vinyl.
