8010a’s are tiny, indeed! With the paired Genelec downward facing sub (forget the model #) they sound great for not alot of money. I do not work very loud anyway, so they are awesome. Anything above about 500hz is pretty much crystal clear on the 8010s. You couldn’t use them alone for any sort of detailed low end work, basically. I usually insert a spectral analyzer on the Logic stereo master either way.
I’m going to setup other monitors to mix (mostly) at the board. But I have to take the board apart and do the AFL/PFL switch first, so for now it’s just audio from the focusrite directly.
i’ve only really used it via midi as a third osc layered with the moog so far. I can’t confirm the claims it sounds the same/identical as a mother32, and I doubt it.
Got the Blackbox mounted up on my cable holder, pretty much in the perfect place for when I’m standing at the modular. Really hyped on this thing; really helping keep the eurorack under control for more structured stuff.
so on the other end of the sequencing spectrum, I got this quite awhile ago. untested/no power cord for 20$, thinking I had one but didn’t. I finally ended up with one that fit:
there is a power module for each row (those blue lights on the right side of each row), in the back of the eurorack case there is a Furman power conditioner that everything is plugged into.
you can see more details on the power requirements etc on my modulargrid page here:
i’m still connecting stuff and moving things around. It sounds easy right, and I guess it would be if all the cables were purchased at one time with all the specific requirements. I have certain units I want going into an APC, some don’t matter, some synths that want 1/4 TS vs TRS, and the various other usual constraints. All while running various existing cables thru what is basically a jungle gym of a desk.
I have 3 10 foot 8x1/4" TRS snakes from the 24 direct ins of the board connected to the back of the patchbay, with the mixer going out to the Focusrite . ADAT Optical in and out from the E6400ultra directly to the Focusrite. The E5000ultra needs to be somewhat near the 6400ultra, because they share the same SCSI2SD external device and 2X2 SCSI switch. Both e6400’s are multi-output so they can take up half the boards ins if I let them, while the e5k is not expanded so only 2 audio outs. I think with the 8 channels of ADAT connectivity i can get around that, but as you know this 8 channels can have nothing done with it via the mixer. (meaning no send/return/aux type connectivity on those 8 channels of digital audio).
The drum machine, Grandmother, and bass station are all mono output; but the drum machine has another 4 unmixed outs as 1/8". The Akai s2800 is just stereo. But, I think I want them all connected to the first few channels of the board, just because that’s how I’ve always worked. Kick on 1, etc…This is when you find out the only 1/4" TS stereo to 2 TRS 1/4" cables you have are too short! lol.
If that isn’t enough pitfalls, variables, and constraints; my USB scenario is maybe worse. The Virus TI also connects digitally in and out to the Focusrite via SPDIF; which sounds amazing when compared to audio/midi simultaneously over USB. But the USB connection of the Virus disables the audio and SPDIF outputs! The Mystery Islands MIDI librarian software sucks compared to the Virus Control plugin; but the Virus also “demands” it’s own USB port. (Via hub can work but sucks too). I can use the Virus for Omnisphere Hardware Integration (kb controller style), but not while it is linked to Virus Control. This means the Bass Station gets used for that, which is sick too; but leaves it wanting a USB connection and obviously proximity to the Mac as well. I want to wait until the M1 macs become more frequent upgrades for people so I can get a decent deal on a Mac Pro from right before they switched processors.
luckily i’m not in a rush or I’d screw this up royally. avoiding most of it has to be one of the most attractive aspects of Eurorack/Modular.
Sorry if tl;dr. I actually asked about the electrical because I was curious what you think about Power/Line conditioners. I’ve heard such varying opinions on the whole subject it may as well be politics.
By my quick math looking at the modulargrid layout of the beast it seems it’s only about 80HP wide? It looks wider in the pics for some reason…like it is bigger than one standard rack unit
