Gear Lust Part 7

the saturation is pretty nice, but the amazing stereo spread you can get out of it is just incredible. Right now I have it set up after a mono reverb effect and getting such a great psychoacoustic random autopan type effect from it. Mine is almost always set in the bounce mode for the amazing stereo-ization it gives mono sounds. Its great for slapback delay effects. It also is amazing at making any synth you pass thru it sound like Boards of Canada. You can set the effect to 100% wet and use a healthy amount of modulation from the random LFO and you get a sound like a tape machine constantly speeding up and slowing down, giving a great slow random pitchbend to anything you send thru it. Also great flange and chorus type sounds, which I prefer to most other processors because the LFO is random only instead of cyclic modulation, which I think sounds much more organic. Because I have it set up on my mixing desk I can actually add feedback to it, getting around it’s only real drawback (lack of feedback)
edit: damn autocorrect

Many thanks! I am going to forawrd thus info to him  sounds amazing…maybe I bought the wrong pedal lol

Nah, all strymon stuff is ace, I’m sure you are gonna love el capistan! Are you integrating it into a mixing board or with your daw via your interface? I’m working on a track for the TUNA thread drenched in both Roland RE501 and the aforementioned reverb thru Deco. The whole track is also just one large patch on the modular being sequenced by a reaktor patch I’ve been building this last week, so maybe it will be of interest to the people in this thread as well

At the moment I am mostly multitracking through a MOTU 828 …using a patch bay for routing.

Id really like to find some hardware that was basically just rackmount send/return or like a rackmount wet/dry knob.

I have two mixers, but one is shit and one doesnt have individual outs : /

would love to hear that track!

It’s not in production anymore, but you can find these used:

perfect for a dub setup.

Track is pretty sparse. Kinda like glitchy dub acid. I wanted another acid bass line but I ran out of envelopes :frowning:

I’ll probably multi-track it and add overdubs, but I won’t have any more time to work on it before the TUNA deadline, so it is what it is at the moment…

That was lovely

DSI Discontinues Five Synths. Dave Smith has discontinued five synths: Mopho, Mopho Keyboard, Mopho Keyboard SE, Tetra, and Evolver. A spokesperson told SonicState: “A time comes when every good synth deserves its place in the great electronic retirement community in the sky. If you ever wanted to add any of these highly-regarded instruments to your arsenal, get them now before they’re gone.” More info here.

@knobgoblin loving that man, choon!

@tabasco yea, DSI synth prices have dropped considerably, especially on the discontinued products. Very soon itll be a great time to buy used. Perfect Circuit Audio has (had?) new Mopho Keyboards for 500USD.

At this point I feel obligated to buy a Tetra to polychain to my MoKeys…especially at 650 new…

The El Capistan is amazing. I was immediately aware that it doesnt sound like a real tape echo. It sounds significantly better than U he Satin’s tape echo presets. It is a real pleasure to tweak live as well. Even if the implementation is very simple the spring reverb is lush and adds a brillaint depth to the echos if used sparingly.

oh sweet, I didn’t realize the capistan had a spring verb emulation built in. I loooooove spring reverb. At our recording studio we have an old spring reverb rack from Orban that is just sick. When you turn up the monitors loud enough the springs will start feeding back acoustically as well as electronically. There are times where I wish the Re501 had a router matrix built in. The effects are all parallel, which is great most of the time, but sometimes you want to run the echo into the reverb or use the echo as a pre delay function for the spring reverb. Having a second rack that just does the spring would allow me to to do that. But the Orban is just so awesome when tracking that we don’t want to pull it out and move it to the mix and master facility. Time to scrounge through the classifieds.

Goddamn, just saw them live in SF the other night. Best live electronic music act I’ve ever experienced. Still on an absolute high from the experience

Yes, it is one of the secondary knob functions.

I have been wanting a real srping reverb as well. All I ever see are these un powered spring reverb tanks, which I am not sure is what I am looking for.

This made me giggle more than it should have.

Brilliant! thank you…So, I guess Ill be buying a spring reverb tank now,.

think i finally caught the gear bug (just when i started having disposable income left over from the vinyl habit…), anyone recommendations for a cheap (hardware) compressor? never owned an outboard one, for now i mainly just want one to add a bit of character (probably not even on the master), so no @ the rnc. currently looking at dbx 160x/xts, seems like a bit of a one trick pony but it’s only 150 and maybe i can crack it open and do some mods. mate is also trying to get rid of his 3630 for 50, i know they’re fucking shit though (apparently decent if you bypass the gate circuit?)

alternative is doing an 1176 build (300-500?), probably worth it considering what you can get out of it though

Offer him 35, they’re not worth that much. Mine was 25 a while back. They also do an updated 3632 which is a bit better.

But honestly, as a cheap way of getting some hardware experience with compressors, it’s ideal to get going with. As you’ve said, you can’t really put it on the master (though it would probably do a nice job of squashing some LIES/DABJ style noisy house), but for individual bussing and getting a few choice effects (like a really really REALLY pumping sidechain) it’s great fun.

Failing that, if you want to go slightly deeper then an FMR RNLA will do a much better job, though is markedly more expensive than the Alessis.

nice one, thanks for the input. think the 3630 is gonna be it, apparently a few things you can do to make it less of the paperweight it is

I’ve got a budget-as-fuck rack with the 3630, an Alessia midiverb and another couple of bits of dirt cheap kit. Whole thing probably cost me less than 100 including the Ikea case I’ve mounted it in (not my photos)

love it, that’s exactly what i need. just need to buy some rack strips and screw em on

also how do you like the midiverb? i was looking into quadraverbs a while ago

Cheap and cheerful, does what you might be imagine. Have tried putting it on the master a couple of times for a shimmery effect. Again, was ridiculously cheap, I think I paid 15 for it?

Quadreverb would give you a lot more character, I believe it played a big part in the jungle/DnB scene of the early 90s.
