Gear Lust Part 7

yeah i know aphex and autechre used em in the 90s as well. seems worth it since theyre dirt cheap

I traded off a Quadraverb long ago. I would love to hear it again.

Zoom 1204’s sound good too!

Just get involved. When you’re at the bottom end of the market, if you buy something that cheap and it doesn’t work out, resale fluctuation won’t be anything so much as to notice.

I would look into something like a RAT distortion rack or an EHX LPB 2UBE instead of a compressor. Character compressors tend to only sound good on really specific things.

If you could push your budget to 600 the OTO Biscuit has all kinds of character and a lot of unique sound FX in it. I use it on every track. Dont let the demos fool you, it can be subtle.

Id also suggest make the suggestion that running audio out the box and back in is probably only worth it for higher end, characterful units. Maybe consider a synth instead? DSI just did a price drop.

2ube might be interesting but in terms of straight up distortion, my needs are met (made myself a few different basic ones plus everything ive been doing lately has been getting mixed down on a 4 track w/ some nice saturation). was hoping to get something i can use instead of those at times (plus you know, to use it as a compressor)

did just buy a synth as well though lol, tx81z for the low

i think tabascos right though, it’s really just a gamble until you stumble onto what works. especially on compressors like the one im after, like you said

How much did you get if for? I got mine for $50 but I also bought a JV-2080 and it was from a friend of mine.

Tx81z is actually a decent synth, most famous for the Lately Bass patch of course.

Nowhere near that good of deal, I paid 40 for it. 2080 looks sick, I know Legowelt loves his

Nah, 50 bucks was the deal because I bought another synth. I think I paid $300 for the 2080 but it was loaded with expansion cards including one I was really after (I had a 1080 already) which was Keyboards of the '60’s and '70’s.

It is a cool synth. It is capable of a lot of sounds, especially with the expansion cards. It really is a pad machine in my studio.

Got a hand-me-down 1080 myself, lovely lovely patches and the effects are fun to play with once you get to know the UI. I’ve got a retroverb lancet after it that just transports it straight to 2015 and beyond.

Got me a Beatstep.

Update - it’s amazing.

That’s awesome! So you are liking it then since you said it’s amazing. I almost picked up a used one last week but it didn’t work out. It was only 50 bucks cheaper than new, I will probably just go for a new one when the time is right.

What synths are you doing the CV/Gate sequencing with?

Guy in the store was nice enough to price match it down to Thomann, so I saved like $30 off the sticker price.

Only scratched the surface with it so far. Got it hooked up and sequencing the Minibrute,so CV/Gate stuff yet as didn’t have the cables.

Got a feel for the basics, programming and saving sequencers, switching between scales (which is fucking SWEET). Going to look into the CV/gate stuff today and see what bits I’m missing to get it all hooked up, then will hopefully sequence the Minibrute and Darkstar off it (though the Darkstar could be done via the Mini thru already)

First challenge I’m finding is getting the Beatstep and Minibrute to sync with the 707. I tried connected MIDI out from the Minibrute to the 707, but the beat kept wandering, so need to look again at that.

Am hoping I can carry on using the 707 as the ‘master’ clock (it’s rock solid on timing) and then have the Beatstep slaving off that, and the Minibrute off that.

Though I’m going to run out of connectors once I’ve done that, so might need to invest in a MIDI clock to keep the 707, 727 and ER1 all synced together if I’m layering percussion.

Also went to Ikea yesterday and got a new desk;

Includes a hinged cable pit at the back to keep wires and stuff in, plus $60 off. Just got to get the setup layout right, and work out where the outboard stack is going to go (though does mean I can hopefully mount the Redsound Elevata underneath the compressor and reverb.

EDIT - ok, looks like I can link the 707 off the DIN sync. So it’ll be Beatstep > 707 > 727, hopefully.

EDIT #2 - Need to get some CV cables. Plan now is to have;

MIDI Out > Darkstar
DIN (clock) out > 707 > 727
CV1 > Minibrute

Which leaves me CV2 free for future additions.

I don’t make threads so maybe this is the right place. I need a vst sampler
with online timestretching. So lets say I sample a bass line and then I want to transpose
it to some extent without messing with the length of it. I was quite impressed with Kontakt’s
algorithms, but it is outside of my price range.

Now got the Beatstep driving the DarkStar via MIDI and the 707 via DIN sync. Going to have to wait until I get some CV patch cables before I bring the Minibrute in as well. Have got everything running through the mixer now, so able to get a very rudimentary ‘track’ going live.

Only issue I’ve encountered (apart from spending fucking ages trying to figure out how to get the 707 to accept a MIDI signal) is that the 707 sliders seem to have developed a minor fault where if they’re pressed from one side they cut out and it loses sync.

Might need to take the cover off and give it a clean/wipe down, which I’m not especially looking forward to. Also need to look into syncing the 727 off the 707 now I’ve got the DIN sync functionality sorted.

Shite techno, here we come :8ball:

Just head over to gearslutz and listen to some of the techno there…people with 20k studios are still making shite techno lol

Glad you got it all sorted, would love to hear anything you come up with!

"On October 17-18, New York welcomed the first Machines In Music fair.

Organized by popular Brooklyn-based synthesizer store Control, the “modular synth fair” invited manufacturers, fans and practitioners to inspect and enjoy some of the most intriguing devices on the market and to connect with a scene that’s surprisingly fast-growing, considering the technology was considered to be outmoded."

Oh man. The new Push looks super sexy.
Also, the new features and general better integration looks to be the bomb.

… his own fucking lathe?! How do people afford stuff like this?
