Hey there!
I’m new to the forums. I’m a female musician/producer. Been making music all my life but started playing around with Logic in 2011/2012. Just released a dubstep track Noob Tube. I know there’s a lot of flaws on this one so I’d like to know what I could’ve done to make this track better. Especially looking for mixdown tips. Still learning how to EQ n stuff. :3 Thank you in advance.
Noob Tube
Mixdown isn’t too bad. Drums could maybe do with being a bit more in the mix, but that’s more about EQing the other elements to give them space rather than bringing them up.
Maybe try some subtractive EQing, where you create a frequency ‘hole’ in the synths for the drums to fill whenever they hit. Something like a sidechained EQ that detects when the kick hits and ducks a specific EQ range on the other elements accordingly (maybe…this is just the first idea that sprung to mind)
Arrangement wise the tune does get a bit repetitive. The second half sounds a lot like the first and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of variation in the programming of the drums or the synths. So maybe make the tune shorter, or else switch it up in the second half to keep it interesting and less loop sounding.
add more sub
I honestly never knew that sidechained EQ was a technique that people used. I just sidechain everything to the kick and the snare. I’ll definitely experiment with that then.
Yeah, at first I was stoked with the overall arrangement but after a couple of weeks I realized it’s repetitive. I tend to have a hard time doing 32 bar drops without making it too repetitive so I normally stick to 16bars. Also have a hard time with second drops I struggle with making them different from the first drop without it sounding like a completely different track so it always ends up boring. I’ll work on that.
Really appreciate you taking the time to give feedback!
I get what you mean cause I have this sometimes, but generally I find it’s best if you don’t over think it. As in the second drop doesn’t necessarily need to be significantly different or include new elements entirely. Maybe change up the sub pattern, mess with the drums, maybe chuck in a ride or bongos or something. It’s entirely circumstantial though and this might be different for everyone. But it does help I feel
