Production Thoughts

Good song.

Trying shit out in Reason, and I think you are correct really, hard not to hear the bass as the root.

Don’t forget about inversions. When you start to add more notes it is just more harmonic color but the only notes you really need to define a chord are 1st, 3rd and 7th.

I know, kinda drunk and stoned.
Made a short example. It starts with just intervals with bass, the next after is three notes.

EDIT reuploaded with the same intervals/chords running one more round with the bass note changed.

My point is that the bass is not necessarily the root.

You removed that track.

The bass doesn’t always have to be the root but it generally is. There is a lot to work with in that framework.

Try again now, the link works here.

I agree on that it generally is, yes. But not always. There are many options, especially with what key the song is/feels is in. Old school dnb and jungle utilize this a lot.

Forgot the private link extras.

The link still doesn’t work.

But go ahead and play your bassline in 3rds if you want to.

The funny thing is, that will probably become the tonal center of your track.

Yeah, hehe. You can do a lot with less. That’s the floaty feel I talk about, not having a defined key center. Very common in jazz, of course.

I might not know how to describe stuff properly, but I kinda know how it works. At least I can make use of the things I know.

I’ll lfo your mum, is that better?

I’d rather continue the theory talk here than start a separate thread.

Was just kidding m8, carry on

the best part of production is arguing about music theory and how other people have wielded it instead of making tunes

Has anyone used this or similar?
I might get it… not for any serious compression/saturation needs but more for colouring sound/sound design

I’m going to buy the SuperVHS plugin for $29 anyway, and I can get the Aggressor with it for an extra $20

Isn’t every effect parallel if I want it to be? Seems like a weird usp to me.
Might sound great though!

phase issues

You can use this as an effect though, like in the old tracker days. I’ve tried it with my Dark Energy; double tracked the same melody line with very small changes to get that old school phasy goodness.
