Dmi9 - D7 - G7 - C7

That is a ii-V-I. Briefly raise the passing tone of the 3rd in Dmi9 from F to F# which will be the leading tone into G. The C can go a half-step down which is a B and the 3rd of a G7. G7 will want to move the the B to C and with the F and half-step down to E which is the 3rd of C.

Do you even Dmi9?

Sounds legit.

Even though this guy focuses on guitar, he has some good thoughts about how to use theory in a constructive way.

Yeah just send it through a return track???

I actually understood everything in this video and started making something.

Basics of Meshuggah’s rhythmic style

  1. Maths
  2. Witchcraft
  3. Chug

:joy:
Jokes aside, I love Meshuggah.

I really understood the video too. I have tried this phasing elements before, but never really got anything I would want to show anyone haha. One way I uesd to try it is by having 5 bars of 4 notes each (=20). Within that the melody would repeat 4 times of 5, but the drums would repeat 5 times of 4
Therefore, each element completing a cycle over 20, but with different phrases(?), so they would shift against each other.

Does that make any sense?

Yeah sure.

Made this yesterday just to try the concept out, sounds are pretty much placeholders. The basic riff idea is old, created it on guitar many years ago but haven’t used it for anything. Developed it a bit more to make it fit.

Just whacked this together to see if I could make the 4 & 5 thing work.
I suppose it kinda does…

Down melody is 5 notes repeating 4 times in 20
Up melody is 4 notes repeating 5 times in 20

Yeah man, sounds cool.

Great read:

Her writings on “Structure Borne Sound” are also great.
