Production Thoughts

What types/ammount of compression and EQ are you guys using on your tracks.

I go for less is more these days and try and let the master give the energy.

I use parallel compression on my kicks and snares, and maybe a light glue comprosser on my sub for punchiness.

EQ wise I don’t tend to EQ my drums much just my kick and snare and maybe use the haas effect on the hats and percs for extra cleanliness.

Synths and leads I’ll try to subtractive eq but I have a subtractive eq on the master too, only small Q changes however, subtle but effective

Compression:
None

EQ:
I usually do the following…
Sub - cut everything above the bottom end of the kick
Kick - cut everything below the top end of the sub, a few notch cuts and boosts if needed
Everything else - cut everything below 200 to give the sub and kick room

Other than that, it all depends on what the track needs.
I do mostly subtractive EQ. I might boost a few mids/high mids in synths.
I like to notch cut frequencies in certain sounds, and then give a slight boost in the same notch to others if it needs a little breathing room.

I haas effect percs & hats if they’re mono sometimes

Thats generally what I do bro, to a tee, except some parallel glue compression on the kick and snare

OH and sidechain my sub to my kick

There is no formula.

Use it where it is needed.

think is the best break, so true. amen sounds trash at 130

Think break is my favorite break as well.

Also, about the Amen at lower BPMs…

aight u got me on that one

It’s all situational, i generally EQ almost everything, one thing i almost always do is highpassing the entire drum folder.

Sometimes i boost specific frequency ranges before sending the signal to distortion to get a different sound.

As for compression, mostly using it on pads, reverb tails & stuff. Sidechaining what needs to be sidechained. Compared to some other producers i’d say i use it somewhat sparingly

feels a bit naff to have the think shakers in 80% of tunes i’ve made recently, but damn if they aren’t good

So use it at 160-170 then, as God intended.

give me >200bpm amen breaks or give me death

i do this a lot with the Brute preset for Live - Compressor, sometimes i’ll stick 2 on something and sidechain the 2nd one to diff tracks so the distortion from the first compressor gets affected, often in cool rhythmic ways, like kind of random polyrhythms. But as-is that Brute preset can give you that ‘flappy speaker’ vibe, regardless of the freq of the sound running thru it, minimal tweaking required imo

Ah, cool. I use Reason, so guess I’m gonna have to experiment a bit. Probably somehow possible to do in there too.

just find the meanest compressor you can

I almost only use Reason stock plugs and some REs, it’s a bit overwhelming to try to find out what VSTs are good and useful. Also broke af most of the time.

Brute Compressor is King
