Production Thoughts

Shit gets complex.

The best part about that for me is that i actually really understood it! (Mostly. I still have no idea what tritone or major 5ths of the root note or all that jazz means)

Yeah, that dude does a great job with explaining stuff.

question for the crowd, what do people usually mean when they call a mix/set a “production mix”??

question for the crowd, what do people usually mean when they call a mix/set a “production mix”?? like mix as in a dj mix

its a mix of tunes that they themselves made

random question:

anyone know what EQing (low cut + high cut) to do for techno sidechain reverb?

Til it sounds good? :man_shrugging:

Hah, a bit wide, that one.

Sound choice comes before effects.

highpassing kicks: simple hipass or autofilter?

Why would you auto filter? Surely you give up a lot of control over your EQ that way?

not really? by autofilter i just mean any type of filter that moves without using separate daw level automation. it can use envelopes, lfos, etc and you can have a lot of control. Most samplers have a filter envelope function

Ah yeah I got you. Sorry thought you meant like a preset filter

my fave for this exact purpose is the hpf on the Waves G channel. it’s really subtle and seems to filter less aggressively than it seems like it should from the cutoff reading, so it gives you really fine control over how much of the boom you get rid of. but any decent eq would work imo. i can see what you mean with autofilter but I’ve never bothered and never found it necessary

most of the hi freqs in a kick are at the beginning transient so it you just want to get rid of the boomy tail eithout affecting the sub content of the initial hit usually the best thing is to just shorten the sample length/release

move the kick out of the bass space
or fade the bass where the kick hits - cuz u likely wouldnt be able to hear the bass in that short instance

u need the transient to smack

im sometimes doing this before even making a bassline lol, i kinda like for every little bit to sound as good as possible before moving ahead
