Production Thoughts

sounds pretty chill tbf

it’s fascinating music but honestly kind of brutal just cos there’s no discernible patterns and it is super dissonant (to my uncultured western ears ofc). Enjoyed the experience but the music is pretty intense.

Spending a couple hours sorting out & organising some samples.
Thinking of descriptive names is my favourite part. These are some synth samples

Fuck some of those are so slick and smooth

Yeah innit. I kinda get the lingo behind it too, but I don’t know it by heart.

That D flat Major13 to D flat Major9 at 02.16 is fucking lovely

Been working on a tune for awhile and have been pretty discontent the whole time. I’ll like bits here and there but it just keeps feeling kind of cheesy I guess.
Anyway, been thinking on it and I think it’s cuz I’ve been trying to make it in a style I’m not used to. Been trying to make some kind of latin dance song type thing, and I just haven’t listened to enough of that music to make something that’s going to sound authentic.

in a way it’s good because you’re expanding your comfort zone, but I completely relate, when I try to make a style that isn’t really my forte, the first few attempts are always kind of cheesy or not professional sounding even though I feel like I’m capable of making great sounding music of certain styles. it can be frustrating but also rewarding

I have the same trouble making shit that’s got that Bug/dancehall kinda vibe.
Took me ages to get a beat pattern that sounded good, but I just can’t make the rest work. Always sounds cheesy as fuck.

my new favorite trick is to put a midi transposer as insert effect to a “drummer” like Superior, etc. depending on the kit, you can generate a ton of percussive loop samples just by shifting the playback +/-. and they are all already on beat.
it’s so obvious, i had never thought of it. but i haven’t seen mention of it either.

you can automate the slider. like a crossfader.

Yeah I wouldn’t even say I’m upset about it, definitely learned a little bit from it.

In the videos about maqam I’ve watched, the guy talks about how you need to listen to a ton of arabic music if you really want to learn it. You have to internalize the melodies and the rhythms, the phrasing and ornamentation.

You can’t just take a clave and call it a Latin song lol
