Production Thoughts

cool cool

Was going to sit down with some theory stuff today, but I didn’t get time to.

My plan is to map out all of the diatonic triads in all the seven modes, then make a chart in Roman numerals, to quickly see which chords are maj/min/dim/aug regardless of what key you choose.
I could google all of it, but I think it’d make a good exercise.

Do not trust the algorithms.

From that article:

Can politicians save musical diversity?

Fuck that. Politician don’t know shit.

In the film and television industry, international streaming services such as Netflix and HBO are required to produce a certain proportion of Norwegian films and TV series.

What does that mean? How many countries and languages are there? What is the Norwegian version of Netflix? Why place the burden on HBO and Netflix?

This is not directed at you Paralytik, just responding to the article.

have you even tried spotify? and what do you even mean by “picked by”? spotify recommends you new music and creates these lists based on what you listen on it. I for example listen to a lot of underground and old rock and I’ve gotten sick recommendations from it for songs I wouldn’t have ever heard before. from really random forgotten artists. I think it works fine

1 BigUp

yeah the spotify algorithm is sick lol

i dunno about super underground techno or electronic cus i listen to that on bandcamp

but for rock, soul, rnb, pop, hip hop etc… the spotify algorithm is so good. It literally takes trillions of data entries and from that data pieces together patterns from other peepz innit. It’s not some haram marketing dude lol its just data iirc

when you first download it you probably get some haram marketing dude try shove katy perry down ur neck but once it realises you wont listen to it, it then switches to the machine learning algorithm so that you stay on spotify as long as possible for the ads, which then obvs gives you the sickest shit that you specifically should be in to

u guys are such tru heds lol take a chill pill

1 BigUp

if it wasnt for truheds there wouldnt be any chill pills

needed front runners to make that happen

the article is more indepth and has a broader perspective than this discussion

its among other things arguing that the data’ing has an accumulative effect

that in the long run, basic premise popularity algorithms could change music making

so its not about what has already been made, but what happens when the human is taken out of the equation
what hegemonizing effect or how an algorithm consolidates certain basic preferences in the long run

its a pretty good example that theres already a site called forgotify that collects unplayed tracks from spotify

gonna finish reading it later

I only listen to black metal recorded in a cabin in the woods on a 4 track by bands with indecipherable logos. And I only buy it on tape from Norwegian mail order catalogues.

i doubt anyone making underground music is aiming for commercial success, if they are they’re making the wrong music.

…and if commercial success means spotify streams then the only commercial success is for spotify shareholders. Fuck spotify tbh

the audience that listen to ‘underground music’ will still have a certain level of influence on the underground artist - yet the audience will still be informed by spotifys algorithm

if you are creative enough you will just use the constraint the algorithm imparts on ‘selections’ of music against it - like a creative hurdle

its almost a linguistic discussion

what is called selection in terms of what the algorithm does - what its sold as - is positive

but what it actually does is the opposite: it overlooks stuff - ‘de-selecting’

it was interesting when fx burial didnt want to cut his collage bits into smaller ‘radiofriendly’ durations of like 3-5 minute bits - but insisted on these 12-15 long bits - which means it works less in a dj setting

they were not good enough quality though, he didnt have it in him to make long interesting tracks

but it might have been cool if all post dubstep pseudo garage slow juke tracks had been 15 mins for a while

this is sort of an example of some creative decision that an algorithm might ‘de-select’ just because of data’ing, stats’ing, etc

I think I’m going to try and start working on songs by making the intro first. I feel like when I make a loop I don’t have anywhere to go. I have a satisfying loop and I feel pretty done with it. Uninterested.

Not a bad idea that. I suffer from the same problem

Just fade in/fade out, intros are for pussies

true, i love intros

Make intro/outro-less 64 bar grime loops.
Sell to MCs.
