Production Thoughts

I’d say that it’s easy to go too far with over-stereo-ing bass sounds too but its more about moderation than either absolutely 0 or “go hog wild it doesn’t matter”. like ime you can definitely have basses that don’t feel that heavy when there’s too much stereo filling up the entire track. it becomes less focused. but sometimes just monoing the bass track entirely kills the vibe of it. idk thats just me

I wouldnt mix a tune in a way that goes against it being cut into a record

No danger of anything I ever make being cut to vinyl

no its a bad idea

the positive consequences of monoing the low end spreads to all other elements in the tunes you know - the whole ‘production tradition’ is based on this

its the whole balance of a tune that would be affected if you didn’t do it

especially the relation between breaks and bass

but all the way up the frequency spectrum and stereo image/ mix image of the tune

think about any distribution of energy in a machine or a closed circuit, its the same with a tune - its infused from the bottom or ground up - like where the energy comes in

that’s only if youre lathe cutting although I’ve met a few engineers who never needed bass summed to mono, maybe they had some amazing kit or something

I think you’re wrong here, there’s a physical limit to how “wide” the bass can be below some certain freq on vinyl, regardless of how you cut it. There’s really no difference between cutting a master plate for pressing, and cutting every disc separately AKA “lathe” (the process is called lathe cutting in both cases btw). The limitations are the same.

I’m guessing these engineers did in fact sum to mono. Just because they say you don’t have to do it yourself, does not mean they don’t do it.

Don’t most subwoofers flip the signal to mono anyway? Pretty sure mine does at least

This too. On almost all clubs, the subs only output mono anyways. Big aspect of this discussion imho.

tbf this guy masters like blues records and folk stuff so it’s probably not comparable to the convo here

Non mono bass in this context can be pretty important actually imo. A lot of those more folky styles get a lot of mileage with panning

I had to stop supporting FuntCasse because he cusses and uses the Lords name in vain during his livestreams.

Bass != Sub bass

Not much of the latter in blues.

Which is why I said bass not sub

Then we’re on the same page. Of course lots of bass / low mid guitar stuff going on in… well… guitar-based music, hehe.
