Production Thoughts

My bass has been utter shit lately lol. I also usually either try and have a kick that sits more in the mid range, and maybe duck/compress the bass a bit when it hits (been lazy lately tho)

I think u guys are looking way too deep into it. Usually it works best for me if the kick just works with that bass.

Threre is a really good but cheesy example in trap/rap productions of like “spinz” 808 and the “rack” kick. Or like zaytovens kicks and 808s. It is different tho cos it’s not supposed to be as “hard” of a kick as in dance music.

But I bet u guys just think it sounds worse than it does I struggled with that for like 10 years

Not that I’m some kind of authority on this sort of stuff lol.

Might be part of the problem, since I’ve mostly been doing sample pack stuff, the kicks and the basses don’t necessarily just fit

Gonna do some comps that don’t use as many samples soon

aight so might not be what you’re asking at all, because idk what you mean by layering but one thing i’ve been about thinking a lot when re-listening old productions from when i didnt know what i was doing and comparing to more recent stuff from 2-3 years ago is back then i was trying really hard to emulate burial, and have like random background foley

idk its hard to explain but not knowing what i was doing and just grabbing like 30 seconds of some movie scene foleys and looping it and layering it underneath pads and synths did add some texture and i dont know why i stopped doing that

example:

some shit i made 15 years-ish ago, no idea what i was doing, messy as fuck, but it has character imo, couldnt even do it again if i tried with a gun pointed to my head, idk how i did it, fr

some shit i made 4 years ago, cleaner but something’s missing, soulless

tldr: find “quiet” parts in movies where there’s some foley sounds in the background and just layer this with your pads/synth = instant character, maybe, NFA, DYOR

Thanks for respecting my pronouns

I feel like i was kinda doing that with my own post processing and resampling, and yeah, for some reason stopped.

Shipping us all hardware, nice

I do this A LOT. Always makes my shit stuff sound less shit.

Your sarcasm just lost you a Juno 60 buddy.

I do the same thing as @faultier and @sleeps for the most part:
Take some random nice sounding foley/field recording (i.e the sound of paper being crumbled), chuck that into a sampler which chops the sample at transients, put an arp behind it with random mode, set desired gate length, hit record and play randomly until I have something I like. Resample and pitch that down, pull down the volume and likely eq it a bit so as not to take up too much attention.

In my experience: do this enough times, resample → pitch it down/up w/e → apply effects → resample again → repeat. I’ve come to find new rhythms emerge or I’ll get inspired by some weird artifact and then build on that for a while.

Yeah, this is where I’ve been a lazy piece of shit lol

I’ve just been → apply effects and that’s about it

I’ve had good result sin the past in stretching samples out so they degrade, then printing that and dump FX on it. Get some weird glitchy pads to bed things on to

Turns out it wasn’t me. Ableton just crashed again and didn’t give me option to restore losing all my progress :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
