returning to DSF + working on Dubstopia Dystopia

hi. okay so i havent been here in a long time, the last time i was here i was just starting to get into that meditative melting and almost ambient bass sound that i heard about watching timbah.on.toast explain skrillex. i made two threads relating to time signatures and microtonal dubstep and then left because of a motivation swing that basically made it impossible to write music for a while.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

with new years coming to a cloze im finally getting that primal urge to write more stuff, including absurdist bass music. i recently finished a weird one im calling “HNY”:

its a bit of a weird blend of old UK Dubstep and- Slushwave, because for some reason i’ve been getting into vaporwave again lately. complicated story short; the “basically completed” state of this song has inspired me to kinda return to the dubstep forum and talk about an oldschool-dub-inspired-project again and maybe actually work on it next year, and maybe share the scraps of it with the people i know will give a shi-

DUBSTOPIA DYSTOPIA

“Dubstopia Dystopia” is the name of the album, the idea is that its an album sonically replicating the vibes of a ruined city destroyed by too much hard tearout, using microtonality and weird rhythms to hopefully convey that idea. its definitely autistic in conception and i intend to lean into that, and its also mostly motivated by those two topics/threads i created.

heres the current tracklist, the order is probably final but you never know;

two of these tracks i’ve already posted to newgrounds technically; Articulation and Slugway Station, however i might extend the drops in Articulation since they’re rather short compared to the dubstep i’ve been listening to lately. the rest of the songs are of varying levels of “complete”, with HNY basically completed, and Algebra Run basically not started.

somewhat important to mention seeing as im in the UK dubstep space; Wastelands has a written story about a “brostep beast” that terrorizes the city of Dubstopia and sets up the rest of the album, but the current stand-in for which track turns into the brostep beast is Spongebob by Coki. if yall have any track that better fits this narrative let me know; any track that best symbolizes the directional change in what dubstep was becoming towards the end of the 2000s works. then again, Spongebob is a cute name for a creature that starts out small, so feel free to also just re-request that one back at me- i love spongebob

END

anyway thats all i have for you, if my motivation doesnt disappear again, i might use this topic/thread for updates on this dubstep project and maybe share unfinished tracks from it. i havent used forums that much so i am going to assume this is how it works until corrected. :D.

thank you for reading this if you did, you’re extra handsome for that

small update time; so now i have finished the last project of the year, which means that once next year starts i can start properly working on this old dubstep project. i have already started somewhat early by “basically finishing” track 2; Less, it has lyrics now

i still intend to take things slowly until my mind properly settles into next year, but its nice to have this around. im not going to spoil too much from this album before release but ill share track 2 early for funsies;

anyway, im gonna chill for a week or so and then my fun with this awesome genre of music can really begin. beans!

contemplating sprinkling in some more-ambient tracks between some of the tracklist to “give the listener a break”, which is kinda funny when i think about it because in that timbah on toast video about skrillex- like- a big part of the story of dubstep is that over time tearout dubstep was being played more n more; in other words people were getting less and less “breaks”, and here im considering doing pretty much the opposite.

i could also maybe use this as an excuse to explore the Burial side of things, since i did end up listening to the entirety of Untrue like a year ago… and may or may not have cried to In McDonalds. i need to go listen to that album agai

rather interesting update/developement; the album now KIND OF has a narrative.

(break) simply means that its not a dubstep song, though that doesnt mean i havent gone full weirdo-music on em, Shift in Perspective is half actual music and half… dialog between two characters? currently i have them as just formant shifted versions of my voice but if i ever get the confidence i might ask for someone else to send in their own voice so that its not all just me saying the words and the dialog can be between two actually different people.

the songs also all intend to lead into each other so that the final album on youtube can functionally be a single track. here are samples of the current transitions for fun;

Wastelands → Less

Shift in Perspective → Articulation

reinforcing again that this album is kind of- a series of events? or atleast a series of destinations; including dreams (because i had to slip in some yume nikki vibes ofc) in the form of- basically everything between Coffee Break and the third (break), because i felt like doing that.

the “narrative” is vague as hell and i might keep it that way, this album is definitely more about capturing the vibes of a broken city with a tiny population that refuses to give up bass music, and less trying to build a proper story around it; more a snapshot than a moving picture, if that makes sense. i dont think im well versed enough in dubstep history to be the one to write a proper story to this whole idea.

not me only just now finding out that there was apparently a guy also named Distance who is relevant to dubstep history. CONTEXT: like last year i started changing my username online, i go by “▷” online in most places now but i nickname myself “Distance” so that normal people with normal keyboards can type out my username and also because ▷ is not a valid character for a username basically anywhere. i find it funny to think that i share the username with another dubstep producer(?) 20 years apart.

feel free to infodump about this Distance guy, i know nothing about them (assuming that the comment i saw on a dubstep tune (bury da bwoy) wasnt pulling shit outta theys ass)

Distance is pretty notable in the scene…you would def catch some flak using that name

He put out this absolutely legendary album in 2008, for example.
