That may well be true.
But might they not periodically regather
to celebrate their genesis
or to defend poor villages
from the depredations of marauding brigands?
And as to losses,
may not their number be replenished
by astute recruitment from the overground
or, perhaps, from their offspring
inheriting the sensitivities of their parent.
Yes, they may now be a band of isolates
but the bond created in shared experience
seems to transcend the passing of time.
