Tuna - The Legend Continues

@cyclopian - Chiaruscuro is a behemoth!! Textures are superb, and the chopped break gives me goosebumps. The synth in the beginning is so gud! Could’ve been a touch louder. It always amazes me how you guys get these tracks so dense and stuffed full of sounds but nothing seems crowded.

@zij - Yea is beautiful, got that Aphex/Bogdan Raczynski/Chris Clark vibe. I love those clicky popping kicks. Good atmospheres and textures - is that an electric drill I can hear?? I think it could have had a l’il bit more to it structure-wise to give it some definition but that’s prob a personal taste thing.
Can’t say much about Diversions really pretty, could be the start/end of something. The pluck/plonk at the beginning of each bar(?) is lovely. And Perils is interesting. Is it industrial, is it noise, is it spoken word, is it breakbeats, is it what, I don’t know but I really dig it. Whose voice is that?

@MARSEN - got a lot of love for Unfinished Business those collapsing breaks are killer!! Heavy early DSF wob workout! Kick seems a bit flat though, and the snare could be punchier. The midrange wob has a distracting clicky sound at the beginning (most noticable at 02.40 & 02.43) - dunno if that’s intentional, if not maybe dial up the attack a little to get rid of it.

@syrup - 80s soundtrack to a 60s european noir heist movie. The shimmering synths are dope, and that 3 note motif is spot on. Top notch track. :+1:

@lemonhaze - overdriven grimy acid synths are a huge favourite of mine. As is grumbling machine noise. So I’m a big fan of Equalizer… I wish it went somewhere though, there’s some stellar elements that work well together but it’s not much more than an intro to something bigger imho. I do love it anyhow.

@Pokus I’m going to go the opposite way to faultier and say that I think it would be better without those vocals at all. Perhaps some small chopped/glitched parts of them but used as a percussive element. Kinda like how you did in the intro. And maybe some sort of simple melody or something in the second half to drive it through to the end.

@faultier - haha maaaaaayte this is SO dope!! Sample selection is on point, lovely loping beat but the snare could be bigger and get some crashes and rides in there.

Excellent turnout bois. Bringing heat every time. Keep it up!

@cyclopian thats a nice photo. this tune has a slight killah vibe, feeling the kicks blasting through. really nice snares. woah, reverb is also spot on tbh. could play around with that midrange rhythm. could be interesting to hear it lose that speed, then come back in later

@sleeps ooh the filter-work is reaally nice. feel like the clap rhythm could be switched around here and there. oh yeah that second half is something i always try for, that kind of minimalism. that second break as well. could probably cut the tune at that break, around 4.20. is my voice btw :zipper_mouth_face:

@MARSEN solid sound design. this err, reminds me of someone bouncing on a toilet for some reason… very strange wobbler. this might be better without drums even, just working the crazy sounds into something without any fixed genre

@syrup raw! as if Joker made a tune without distortion. Kromestar-y vibes as well, that lead. its a proper zoner, definitely for the deep DJ. its really cool how its so interesting even though the changes are so subtle. maybe cut the length a bit, around 4mins, that little break is a pretty nice point to end

@lemonhaze oh man, this is it. luvly percussion. track name is maybe a bit offputting haha, ive got some really cringy names as well tbh (perils of reflection? ffss…) oof, those last 16bars with the bassline, so good. could just be another 16bars of that and then it ends

@Pokus hmm, this isnt typically my kinda sound. i was checking ur sc and its got some interesting tunes though. i like the kicks on this DC tune. and the low end is great. maybe this is a real club banger? reminds me of some… alone forever nights :cornersault:

@faultier i feel like changing my name to this tune. something kinda cool and vintage. Elton Pepperidge maybe. love the sax.

extra round of bird feed for king jizz the third and yung marseille:

@zij perils: the combo of the vocals with the noisy stuff works real well, very madshit. i think you could mangle the vocal, like run it through some effect and glitch it up and see what you can re use and layer over what you already have imo

@MARSEN that layered snare is sick, feel like the break should be a bit louder compared to other elements in the mix (but again am on shit headphones so could be just that), or maybe they sound too clean compared to the other percussive elements, not sure. wat are u using for the wobs? really feeling them. def a good foundation, just need to be carved into a proper tune construction wise

this, your mastery of how to fill the frequency spectrum without it sounding like a mess disgusts me andrej cyclopede

The wobs are just an Ableton Operator patch with some tweaking from some fx. Yeah the breaks might need a bit more processing, might make them sound a bit dirtier and add some different edits, and the mixing as well as the arrangement overall definitely isn’t there yet. Still sort of the starting point, been busy recently with other things so didn’t spend too much time on it yet but I think the finished product will be cool. Thx for the feedback guys, will listen to everyone’s when I get some time

@cyclopian
Wicked tuna, i just think the little flute melody thing could be a bit more forward in the mix.

@sleeps
Cool tune, i love the pads, i think something like that section 3 mins in could come sooner to make it a bit more lively. Also some more percussive elements to tie it all together would be nice, even something like an offbeat hihat every other 8th.
I like it, but i feel it could flow a bit a better :slight_smile:

Also send stems pls :cornblur:

edit: i keep hitting submit prematurely

Cheers dude. I think I might re-work it. Some sections are definitely too long.
I’ll sort you the stems this week when I get time to render them all :+1:

@zij

Yea - love this, nothing much to say about it otherwise

Diversions - very cool, but due to its nature i can’t say much more, would be nicd to hear it develop into a longer piece

Perils of Reflection is sick, feeling some Vex’d vibes. Not a big fan of the vocal though, i’d say try to fuck it up more, pitch it, granulize it, chop it up whatever, to work it in better, or just get rid of it completely

@MARSEN i think (and i might be very well wrong) that the two bass sounds don’t play together well, maybe try moving one or the other a semitone? Also, some more atmospheric stuff/ fx would be nice. Otherwise big tune, sik wobz

@lemonhaze
This didn’t quite click with me, i think you could play a bit more with automation and fading various stuff to make it feel a bit more dynamic :slight_smile:

@Pokus cool tuna, i feel like the mixdown is a bit boomy/muddy though, the higher bass seems to be a bit too prominent and the mids/highs a bit drowned.

@faultier i like this, could use a bit of a bassline though :slight_smile:

@cyclopian

Chiaroscuro, like in the japanese patterns that are designed to go on forever?
Great tuna! When I close my eyes I envision gritty, dystopian pictures of a post-apocalyptic nature. Superb textures. The glitchy breakbeat, with the underlying, more subtle but steady 303-ish bassline works really well together with the smooth, mystic lead playing (what I gather) is the main motif.
Didn’t quite fancy the female vocal-chop that comes and goes at times, but that’s more personal taste than anything.

@sleeps

You have clearly been working a lot on your songmaking-craft lately! Mixdown is pleasing, love how your snares and claps sound. The groove that you’ve managed to produce with the syncopated chords, sub, kick and snares/claps made me bob my head throughout the whole track. Love how playful and bouncy it feels. I was also plesantly surprised at the switchover around 3:17 before the break. FX sounds bubbly, and I feel no mis-match between selection of all the elements combined. Good work my man!

@zij
Yea - had a small listen to this one a couple of days back, and could already tell that I reall dig the combo of the mellow ‘out of sync’ pluck that starts it all off, with the fast paced drum beat. Mix sounds a bit rough at times imo. Some places your low end muddies up, but the swirly/floaty FX hits you’ve laid on top helps take away the focus from those issues. Imo the gong sound that starts at 1:00 could probably be swapped, but when it’s slowly filtered out I feel that it has its place in the track still.

Diversions ft soleil - What are your insirations on this one? Feels like a conceptual ‘middle-piece’ because of its bare-minimum instrumentation and I find it hard to give constructive criticism on it.

Perils of reflection - The way that this one evolved surprised me. At first when the distorted beat made it’s introduction at 0:24 I immediately thought the contrast between soft vocal and crunchy drums was a nice touch. I get that the vocal was intentionally left un-tuned, but for my taste it gets a bit annoying over the course of the tuna. Still though, I feel that the experimental vibe of this piece - both with regards to concept and mix, makes it an interesting one. With regards to the mixdown I feel that it fits the track, and that there’s not much to adress.

@MARSEN

Through the whole intro I kept hoping for some dope vocal sample, as the vibe you’ve managed to set with the phased synth is exactly where it’s supposed to be (imo for this kind of dubstep).
Sub feels nice and heavy, middle-bass riffing feels on point. Though the whole tune gets a tad repetetive and my attention drifts towards the end.

@syrup

Not much to fault here. Really dig the almost chugging/stomping forward power of this one. Imo the detuned chords could be spiced up maybe just a tad more to keep them less repetetive.

@lemonhaze
Wow this was different. What modules are you mucking with? Since it’s relatively far from a song, and more akin to a small modular-noddle-piece, I find it hard to give any feedback, sorry :confused:

@faultier
Toy-story boom bap? Great chopping and timing of the original sample. Drums could probably use a bit more processing to make them glue together, with each other and the beat as a whole.

Edit: Also, thanx for all the feedback guys. Not a tuna that I was most happy with tbf.

@cyclopian
This is super good, with little more mastering to add stereo (or dimension, or volume) to some sounds can probably be the top in the niche (or maybe it already is).
@sleeps
This is super good, and makes me want to dance. Kinda happy sounding alternative to sinister ruff house styles. Very euphoric and uplifting!
@zij
Yea
Very intriguining and entertaining listen. It’s kinda psychedelic and trance-inducing.
Palace Of Smithereens / diversions ft soleil
What a beautiful loop. I would try to EQ that bleep near the end up or out, just an idea.
Perils Of Reflection
Very good, and very sick. This is one of tunes where there is no doubt roughness only makes it better.
@MARSEN
This is mad. Very tasty phat wobs. Breaking bottles already sounds illegal, but I feel this would benefit from little more drama.
@syrup
This felt kinda blunted at first, but after little more listening I started enjoying the transitions and subtle depths.
@Pokus
The space and rumble on this one are exceptional. The vocals made it quite dissonant to me though, because they sound very happy while everything else is very dark.
@faultier
Feelin good on this one, pretty relaxing and uplifting, and references universe very different from my everyday life. There is a new film called “Shaft”, after some mastering I think it would sound great there.

As for my entry, it’s not a modular stuff, just a new massive. I spent probably 2/3 of time messing with mix, but still not able to get it right. This stuff is so complicated, I feel lost every time, and keep forgetting what the knobs are for. At least it sounded little bit better on loudspeakers than previous time. Still I’m extremely unsatisfied with bassy part, because I need to turn volume like 12 db up when it comes to make is sound the way I want, and I’m not sure how to achieve that inside ableton, because raising volumes there makes it sound very different and totally ruined by compression/limiting.

@cyclopian really respect your production man. I love this kind of dark genre-indifferent stuff that just is what it is. Sounds old school but also futuristic somehow, if I paid for a professionally engineered record and this was on it nothing would seem out of place

@sleeps really like the old school sounds in this one, it’s a fun one. I think the subs could be louder and the clap could maybe use a bit of saturation and sit a bit louder in the mix (but only just). Would have liked some more stuff going on in the sub area in the first drop, might be a stylistic choice really but just a little extra going on in any of the empty spaces you can find. Idk though overall really liked the track

@zij Yea was really cool, like the production a lot. From a listening perspective I felt like maybe it could have gone in a different direction here or there, it felt a bit one note. But everything there is tight and I really like the weird idm-ey/almost footwork vibe. Palace of Smithereens or diversions? Whichever the title is was cool. Not much to say its pretty straight forward.
Perils of Reflection was my favourite for sure, track is a trip and I really like the texture of everything in there. I agree with the comment earlier that’s the vocals could be more processed or effected somehow, but also not sure they need to be. Really cool

@syrup Raindance is a fucking banger. I feel like you really nailed the repetition/subversion balance. Like every time it felt like something new should come along it did. Which is a good thing. Really really like the track only thought I had was I feel like the intro synth pad/drone could use maybe some more chorus or something just to make it feel a bit lusher. Everything bangs tho

@lemonhaze really weird track, not sure I have much to critique about it because you’re obviously going for something pretty out there which seems to have been achieved. I like the distorted-ness any time you crunch up synth sounds like that I dig it. Guess there could have been some more variations on things in there but 🤷

@Pokus fattt track. Really dope production for the style everything seemed pretty on point. Fun one. I feel like maybe the distant percussion hits? If you wanna call them that? The tom-ish hits if you will… could have been a touch louder imo

@faultier doesn’t sound so shitty to me haha. Fairly simple but I feel like a beat like that should be, made me wanna hear some bars over it. The open hat in the second half is a little loud imo but I feel like you hit the vibe that was intended

Fantastic turn out bois. Lots of involvement.
Excellent subs and feedback.
Can’t wait for the next one!

i was searching through these archives and i found this singer called Soleil https://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/158005

wants to be anonymous even though she’s clearly a great singer. so yeah, whoever Soleil is, she’s the inspiration
