Thanks bruv. The bottom one was the first one I drew during my detox stay, going by the dates on the pages. I don’t remember much of the timeline while I was there tbh.
I almost don’t use preliminary graphite sketches at all btw, but I think I used some for parts of the perspective exercises. The perspective is kinda wonky in most of them because of that, but I got some cool results anyways. I’ve obviously used a ruler for the longer straight lines, and to kinda “find the angles“ too between different parts, so they sort of line up.
Regarding the shading, not much is really “shaded” in these per se, apart from the stippling (the small dots) in the 1st one, and on the “building“ in the 3rd. The 5th one has some too, but more on that later.
The 2nd is the one I’m most happy with. I started with a very dry brush (very little ink in the brush on the brush pen) to create a semi-random pattern (like you can see on the right side in the 3rd one, even though I didn’t get very far with it afterwards, might try to continue on it later on), then I tried to “see” what kinds of shapes I could find. My brain apparently switched to pareidolia mode, and I started adding more lines and shades where I thought it’d “make sense”, to define/accentuate the faces and forms I began to see in it, based off of the angles and shading that that was already present in the pattern. It was a pretty cool process mentally. Much more an exercise in visualising stuff, than actually putting down lines on the page.
I initially got way too much ink onto the page in the 5th one, but I started to try to smear it out and just went with it. I guess you could say that some of the shapes on the side of the “head“ are shaded, but I didn’t decide on a clear position of the (imagined) light source, so it’s pretty inconsistent. I just tried to define the forms in whatever angle they appeared to me.
The 4th one was really a mindfuck to work out. It contains at least one “error”, but it was a good exercise to practice freehand perspective. I didn’t use a ruler that much for it, I just started at the top of the page and worked downwards.
Got my Mackie mixer out of storage, I think I finally have a proper stable setup for making 2-step shit now.
Copying a description of the setup I posted elsewhere.
So I’ve hooked up the stuff as well as I can, need a few more cables to make it proper tho. I’m sending MIDI clock from Reason out through the soundcard into the EMX-1, then MIDI out from that into the ES-1 mk II, then I’m using the MIDI thru port on that to send onwards to the Dark Energy III.
__
Audio-wise, I’ve just hooked up one output from the EMX-1, both main outs from the ES-1 for stereo, and one from the Dark Energy (it’s mono so ye). These all go into the Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO on separate channels, then I’m using the direct outs on those channels to feed the audio into the soundcard for recording.
__
I’ve just done some simple tests to check that the MIDI and audio routing works, so no bounces to show yet. Can say that the Dark Energy sounds tasty when I’m overdriving the gain on the mixer channel, wooohooo!
__
Now I just need to read the damn ES-1 manual again so I can record some samples into it and set up some chops.
@butter_man@hubb You guys prolly wanna see this. And whoever else actually still makes music on these accursed boards. @Moens I’ll hit you up with some dubs if I manage to make something nice ye.
Ye, I’m very much a “get it right at the source” kinda guy, so just tryna make the sounds I want on hardware before I record, so I don’t have to bother with boring mixing tasks in the box.
Then I can add whatever I need either with more hardware, or some software. This setup is mainly built for composing, not for jamming on.
i do the same thing, as much as i would like to improvise and dub my mixes on a mixer, it’s a nightmare to record tracks/takes/etc. i just use mixers for color and do all the composition/automation/arrangement in the DAW
Was thinking of making some more sounds today, but only slept like 1,5 hours since yesterday so haven’t had the mental energy. Also got busy with fixing some other stuff, like paying rent etc. Landlord said an electrician would come by “later” to mount this new bathroom fan, old one died a couple of weeks ago. Waited an hour, then called landlord about it and asked where the f is this dude? Then he called back and said Thursday instead so.. let’s see…
@hubb What are you doing, why are you posting this stuff here? Just use F-ART thread or something lol. Also kitbashing is dope, I made some models and shit when I was a kid.
