DSF61 Production Competition: The Remix

Nah, first thought best thought imo. Besides Pokus is in the room so everyone’s odds of winning just dipped looool.

I opened up the pack yesterday and messed around a bit. I’m feeling super shit about my production lately. Idk. Might sad post in the production thread later

It waxes and wanes man.

I’ve come to understand it as me being a radio that tunes in the music that’s always there. Sometimes reception is spotty but that doesn’t mean it’ll always be that way. And when it is flowing, don’t slack.

Yeah I feel that. I’m definitely not tapped into it at the moment lol. I think part of my problem is I’ve been focused so much on traditional African/chaabi music and trying to emulate it that my music is suffering right now.
I’ve got a good handle on the rhythms now, but don’t really know what to do with the rhythm yet

Well… you play it. Play being the operative word here, and it’s not a synonym. Have fun with it and practice at your play so it’s mindful and improves your pleasure.

This applies to so much in life I can’t even begin but trust me on this one. Play, play hard, play well. One of the secrets of happiness. It only becomes work when you don’t want to do it. Make everything play.

Nothing wrong w feeling a musical vibe either, it just feeds what’s to come.

you got till the 5th of may mate dont worry about it. my tune isnt perfect but soon as i got into it i just did it i spent half the time just looping and listening to what i made. analysis paralysis i just pushed on see what works. i got the trial version of a daw so i have too rush quick otherwise i cant do anything with it. you got whole month and probably be better than mine.

ive had to adapt to a lesser than ideal way of working through my stuff if i want too save something i have to export it and work with it again in audio file.

10 years ago i had a cracked version but it was shit,on trial now so i cant save. im going to upgrade in near future. but you got a whole month dont worry about it have few days off if you get frustrated or watch some production videos that motivates me. i guarantee your song will be better than mine

Good point. I’ve been very much focused on trying to do this stuff “right”, rather than just trying to enjoy myself.

I’ve really been stressing myself out about “cultural appropriation” when it comes to learning about these musical styles, which is just silly for a large number of reasons. I just gotta chill out and make something fun, rather than worry whether or not I’m voicing things properly lol

mate its fine you’re obviously just appreciating the culture who makes the music. the fact you even try to do this is honourable. “most” music comes from or originates from black culture that is on here. music doesnt see any colours just do you

This is something I’ve been thinking about lately too. Like, with the whole Mutant Dancehall thing the way I want to do it is to coin a genre name and then proceed to carve out a ‘new’ sound based on the old, much like dubstep (or the regrettably named Riddim lol.)

But along this whole line of thought at first I was like “call it Hall.” So edgy. I mean there’s House and Garage right?

Then I thought about some og dancehall producer who’s been pushing shit for probably 20 years sitting somewhere shaking their head saying “bro it’s still just dancehall at the end of the day.”

Dancehall is an amazingly vibrant, dynamic style that’s mutated plenty on its own without buncha whiteboi netlords doing arguably an unknowing parody… so yeah, I decided to lay off the whole genrification thing if I can help it lol.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t play it, and my version of it. All music gets filtered thru the musician somehow anyway, consciously or otherwise. Chaabi filtered thru some bag-tag machine specialist from the Midwest already sounds pretty fucking interesting tbh.

Yeah thanks dude, good points. I’ve been a bit less concerned about cultural appropriation lately, in all honesty. I think after 15 years of study I can say I’ve put in the effort lol. It just rings in my head every now and then cuz it gets brought up by a lot of the academics I’ve read and listened to.

It’s not like I’m making watermelon man :stuck_out_tongue:

There is something I’m missing tho, but you’re right. I just gotta play around and enjoy and maybe I’ll stumble on it

Get Reaper. Fully functional forever and free.
(you can buy a license to support the devs if you wish. Only 40 odd quid)

i didn’t know it was fully functional i had it in my head it was 60day trial then unusable! and i thought for some reason it was 200-300 quid. yeah definitely getting that today for sure

Nah mate, it’s fully functional, pretty intuitive, and holds it’s own against other DAWs imo.
Yon’t even have to buy a license. You can use it forever without one.
