Jesus, my purchasing list is looking ridiculous right now enough as it is
Beatstep Pro
Minitaur
Eventide Space
Not to mention I’ve got another synth bundle waiting to pick up.
At least I got the smell of cat piss out of my studio, finally.

i want an eventide space too
but i also want an alesis micro and they are supposed to be dirt cheap - - maybe its dsp… all i know is that cool idm people swear to it. like autechre, boards, even those schematic dudes
just a though !
Great music, but fuck trying to get my head around anything they do.
lol yeah
brap brap
Gescom is even worse they are supposedly up to like fifty people including autechre and half of them are only doing theoretic stuff…

gonna check that indepth later !
The Moog Mother 32 is the newest thing that has me interested, though really I’m after an A4 next.
It looks like fun. Unless you like to play live it looks more like a toy then anything else. Then again compared to the VSTs you can get now most hardware kind of seem like toys to me now.
I really think grid controllers will take over from keyboards soon for production. As soon as a decent one comes out that has a nice selection of scales at a fair price I will get one.
@swerver You can tell just from the video that the sound quality of that is on another level from the Roland stuff. I think its going up for about double the price though. I would love to make some really abstract synthy dubstep with it. The kind of stuff that would only ever be played out as a into to a set.
I’m not so hot on a lot of the new “toyish” gear myself, but I have heard a lot of people make cool music with them. I love grooveboxes…but I don’t need another “all-in-one”. I tried the electribe 2 over the summer and wasn’t that hot on it. I’d rather have had…say a true/dedicated 6 voice bi-timbral version of the synth engine for the same money, same sequencer. I ended up keeping the sampler instead.
I’m not hating on the Novation here, but for my setup I don’t need a jack of all trades box.
I do think this could probably make a first nice piece in some one’s budget jam setup.
After watching that Moog video I’m having series GAS for that three tier Moog Mother setup…its like instant Berlin School…
Not sure how many more all in one cheap ‘groove boxes’ the market needs right now, TBH.
agreed, at the least these things should at least copy elektron boxes where they can be used to build an array of gear around i.e ability to sequence other gear via midi or cv in a decent way
swear down, these things are marketed to people that want to spice up their instagram feed with some “hardware” and budding producers that think its a quick way to bypass all the learning of using a DAW or keys etc
if i had enough disposable income tho, I’d prob cop some of these. I’ve hit the limits of the drum machine app I have on my phone that I use while I poo
Usually with a #inthelab attached
Quote from Sound on Sound:
tbf i think those roland new bits are exactly about that cyclopian - just not hardware
but yeah point remains its fischer price tbh
I think the electribes are pretty are useful tools–if I were looking for a first piece of hardware either of them would be stellar for getting some ideas down and then exporting the files into your DAW. It isn’t Elektron Overbridge, but its something.
Having owned a Volca, I was underwhelmed and now Reface, Jupiter modules, the Novation thing, I’m not convinced. I’m sure people will make good tunes with them, but they are very much marketing to the wanna-be crew. What with the analog/live/hardware craze still going strong.
I don’t even mind the Aira stuff so much. I just don’t really care about “repackaged classics”. That’s why I’m more of an Elektron and Dave Smith fan boy.
That being said I think there is still plenty for serious hardware nerds. Elektron is pricey, but I feel like if someone came out with some that was 50% of what one of their boxes can do, I’d just end up selling that to get Elektron.
Besides the Monomachine and Machinedrum are still viable tools and you can get those used for pretty cheap these days.
@tabasco - - this is amazing. I heard it a few years ago and then remembered it and had to tweet keith fullerton to find it. He’s also released stuff as Hrvatski btw.
I just picked up this little Joe Meek preamp, the ThreeQ. I’m liking it so far. First test was a mic, second test was a drum machine. It is definitely a color pre-amp. It has compression and an EQ, so I guess you would call it a channel strip.
thoughts on yamaha ry30?
Nice one. JoeMeek is typically all about color from what I know. I’ve got the MC2 compressor which is pretty similar to the ThreeQ. Though I think I might have been better off going for the ThreeQ tbh.
Tried three shops today, no one had the Beatstep pro in stock.
