Gear Lust Part 7

did you peep this ting tho?

seems really really cool and powerful in concept, havent looked into it too deeply tho, worried i might want to actually buy it if i learn too much

Did briefly: assuming the modules are virtual and built-in?

One thing w all in one boxes that let you digitally program your own signal chain - I’ve always found them to be a little problematic sometimes, either something almost like a summing issue (final output is too much and things start dropping off) or some of the steps along the way - in this case maybe the modules - are bandpassing and stuff that they’re not explicitly supposed to and causing degradation, aliasing, etc downstream…

Now: entirely possible those issues were caused by my ignorance of “proper” DSP chaining protocol :badteeth: but the owners of those boxes agreed it was a problem for them too.

really been wanting to pick one of these up. I’ve watched a few videos showing how easy it is to build patches and set up complex modulation things. I want something that I can bring live that does similar tricks to my Kurzweil ksp8 but isn’t ginormous and doesn’t require unracking and reracking every time.

I didnt even realize you had one of these lol, so much gear tucked away in ya cave haha

do you have any examples of the hardware youre talking about? just curious to see whats been done, havent looked into this sort of stuff at all really

hehe, yeah, easy to overlook the generic 90’s looking box in the rack next to some of the sexier things. I had wanted one since highschool when they were way out of my reach, but I looked them up last year on Reverb and was pleasantly surprised at how cheap they are now. Hardware fx powerhouse, the fx algorithms have some really extended nutty ranges to the parameters. The reverbs in particular can be used as a physical modeling-ish synth/sound design processors. filters and distortions are great, the pitch shifting is not good in a great way when pushed to the extremes, but can stand up to Eventide pitchfactor for subtle widening type shifts. And the modulation is mindblowing. you’ve got envelopes and lfo’s out the ass and they can all be combined in simple or insane ways (lots of complex equations to choose from where the two modulation sources act as the variables.)

Ensoniq DP4 (admittedly old), Line6 Pod 2 (more than once), one of the Boss multifx boxes (forget which.)

I feel like I’m forgetting at least one more, forget which.

Granted: the architecture is probably verrry different but tbh I think it’s the form factor in a lot of these small units that bottlenecks something.

cheers for the info, i think the Zoia is on a fully different level than those tbh, its more akin to something like a MaxMSP computer in a pedal format (i think at least haha, still not dug too deeply into it tbh)

that kurzweil seems p cool, can barely find audio of it on youtube though. any other tips on a good multi fx processor to look out for? I have a dp4 but I’m looking for something a step up

mostly been waiting on a cheap h3000 but the zoia looks so cool for 500, there has to be a catch lol

@_ronzlo yeah good point, thats my biggest problem with the dp4 (yh it is old)

TC Fireworx! I think these can be had for even cheaper than the Kurzweil these days

I’ve started gjetting cravings for the Push 2 again. Realized I don’t really need my iPad pro now that I’m done studying. But I should probably wait a bit; don’t pull the trigger and sell/buy before I’ve got a stable job.

Elastic Drums for the iPad. Srsly.

Cool, gonna check it out. Also, lemur and the likes. Love the idea of integrating the ipad into my workflow (just now starting to realize “why tf haven’t I started doing this yet?”).

Edit:
After some fiddling around, using an external sequencer app with like DM1 together with non-percussive sounds, is a great way of generating atmospheric loops. Ableton Link makes syncing a breeze.

Still miss the ability to launch clips with something other than the mouse, though.

I have a short list of must-have killer apps. PM me if interested. Some of them are too good to share widely…

Here’s the pitch for Elastic:

“Pure Drum Synthesis. Oh, also regular synthesis. Oh fuck it, here’s a sampler too lol.

Also: let’s allow automation on every single goddamn control, independent voice step length, modulation out the wazoo, and it will poop a nice little parcel of wackadoo into your Live session if you want. But why would you?”

no eels tho :frowning:

They’re buried in a submenu but there are eel, lamprey, and lungfish control options.

CV of course. :duncelol:
