You need to get yourself down to the markets of the ancient city of Shenzhen.
Newegg.
Reddit and Gearslutz have good “build a PC” threads but $600 is pretty limiting.
Ok, I’ll have to save some more
Just know that in a room of 10 “experts” on this subject you’ll get 11 different opinions. That’s been my experience anyway.
These might help too - again, others might suggest a different config (most ppl here don’t bother with mics or preamps at first but the longer you produce the more likely you’ll go there: also, their USB interface suggestions are kinda “eh”) …but gets you started at least.
The first article says $600 is good to start with.
My laptop cost 80,000 yen in 2012 and it runs reaper no problem. I’m upgrading to a tower-based system though so I can upgrade it over time. Laptops are convenient for travelling and moving around but ports etc are limited and it can’t be upgraded (plus I want a big screen). I expect to pay about the same but with better specs, I’m going to some computer market in Taipei while I’m there in the hope of picking up a bargain
So I’ve got a nice setup going @my parents place atm. Currently got the Digitact synced with ableton live, two midi-keyboards hooked up, one 25 key and one 49 with faders and transport controls, plus an old electric piano with midi in/out/thru connected via my soundcard. Also got at least 1 electric bass guitar and two cheap electric guitars, plus 3 acousting ones laying around (grew up playing a band with two brothers, explains the amount). Also got at least 4 low-end guitar pedals, plus one condencator mic + a Sure Sm7 that I can rig up if I feel like it.
Had a small 303-kinda-jam going this evening, but switching back and forth between the different channels was a bit of a hassle. Tbf I can really, really see the benefit of having a ‘master controller’ like Push 2 on top of all this. Just being able to be away from the computer for layering loops, quick mixing/levels etc would make it all way easier.
Edit: I’ll post a pic later.
Edit 2: typing this all out, I can see where my “plugin hoarding” mentality comes from… ![]()
You can build something usable for $600 but it doesn’t leave much room to grow…
I’m looking for a laptop, desktop cant be moved between planes very well… lol
Does anyone know if FL Studio Producer Edition includes all fruity VST’s?
From 9 minutes in onwards. Mi mu gloves.
I think that second pic is Keith Emerson’s synth rig?
Yep. Like the actual one played on record/stage. The organ in the foreground is a Hammond C3 as well.
The stack of three ARP 2600s belongs to Depeche Mode.
This exhibition is highly worthwhile:
Prince gear:
The theremin Page used on ‘Whole Lotta Love’
Angus Young’s guitar
James Jamerson’s standup
5000 year old Egyptian lyre
Keith Moon’s drums
Took too many pix to share all of em but fuckin’ A, helluva exhibit.
Wicked!
Hate Prince’s guitars ![]()
