Is drum & bass not well known round your ends? For the most part if I say drum & bass people have an idea at the very least of what I’m on about
Been saying this for decades [mostly at people who used to call all electronic music Techno. My reply was "oh, so you like guitar music then? What is guitar music exactly? Rock, country, jazz? All at the same time? But why can’t I call it all guitar music if you call all electronic music Techno? U TELL ME NOW!!!]
nah bruv… in america most outsiders(people who dont listen to electronica) have no knowledge of different genres. Like theres a 99% chance that if i ask a person on the street what DnB is they would think im talking about RnB. Even among “EDM fans”(ie people who listen to the commercial shit) maybe only 40% know what DnB is.
Yeah, most people who call electronica techno are generally like older people or ignorant hip hop heads. Now the catch term for electronica is EDM or for those who are also several years beyond; Dubstep.
^ So true. I remember trying to convince these gyals to come to a dnb night in 2002 and they were asking if it was danceable and I utterly failed the description…
“Oh yeah it’s danceable! It’s got breakbeats like hip hop but it’s like twice as fast and has all these cool weird sound fx and… wait, where you going? C’mon ladies, don’t take my word for it… ladies? Ladies? (crickets)”
lol. It’s amazing I ever got laid now I think about it.
yeah its easy to forget that while we may be bathing in our music and totally accustomed to listening to this shit day in and day out… For most people(especially us Americans) electronic music outside of house is totally alien.
Like i barely remember how shocked i was when i heard DnB off GTA III 3 years ago.
that blank stare you get when you start talking about tempos to people lol
“halftime 180…”
Both electronica and EDM were terms invented in the '90’s and I have no idea why they are still being used.
Pigeons need holes.
I remember when people called everything electronic Techno, and they are simply not going to get it if you try to explain it to them.
Then it became electronica and then EDM.
Let them stick with Guitar.
My friends didn’t know what “dubstep” was (neither did I to be fair) until like 2007 and that was just Skrillex.
I at least knew edm != Techno. Edm in my eyes was always four on the floor electronic music. But yeah it’s a pretty good catch all term
I dont think Skrillex was even about till 2010/11
^ I would honestly like to see more effort made to distinguish between 4/4-based styles and break-based styles, but to date the only person who seems to see it the same way as me is Bassnectar (at least from interviews I’ve read).
There are many breakbeat-informed house tunes that fit much closer to 4x4 house than anything else… I wouldn’t even try to see things so binary. Vibe beats everything in the end.
Yee it was around 2010. I’m bad with time
EDM is a relatively modern term.it happened around the time of that influx of that 2nd wave french electro, wolfgang gartner shit “complextro” by Porter Robinson,Dirtyloud, mord fustang,Alex Metric etc.Electronica as far as i know has always been a genre within itself.i think you are referring to "IDM"which was a term coined by music journo dickheads so warp and labels alike could sell and pander their specific brand of electronic music to socially awkward, basement dwelling yanks
Sorry, but no. I remember it from the '90’s. I was working in record stores back then.
Just the fact that you mentioned complextro…
Interwebz:
Used as early as '85, tho as a genre name it dates from 90’s.

@John_Doe - you realize IDM was initially a UK thing right? Autechre etc.
Awkward Yanks came later. It was awkward Limeys first.
