I don’t think you want to write music I think you just like posting on forums.
Ok
This is very hard advice to give. Get the worst out of the way first. Dance music in 2015 is like the ice bucket challenge. Most people don’t know why or how, but everyone does it. Because its cool. There’s money, fame, women, etc… but those are PERKS, not the end goal. I’ve been a musician since I was 10. I’ve learnlearned multiple instruments, played in bands, engineered just out of pure passion for my project and picked stuff up on the way. I’m armed with a lot of knowledge now because of the EXPERIENCES. You have to fail. You have to hate your music because it isn’t good enough. You have to constantly push yourself to be better, stronger, and hungrier. I briefly saw someone say “make sure this is something you know you want” and that is very true. Love the music. Make the goal “to make the best music possible”. Make it so you can show yourself that you can do this. You’ll pick it up on the way. ALWAYS ACCEPT FEEDBACK. You’ll never get anywhere unless you learn from your failed attemps. Stay away from the “This is soooo good” and “this is perfect”. It’s never perfect, and those people telling you it is are there to support you. Listen to the bad feedback. Whats too loud, whats not loud enough, try this transition, eq this section etc. In closing, do what you love. You need to find out if music is what you love. When you work at it, you never get tired because it’s your passion.
Thanks for that, man. It helps. The perks are fine and stuff, but the memory that lets me know that this is my passion is the memory of me first realizing why i wanted to do this. It just sounded so beautiful when i first discovered it. I eventually said, “Im tired of being on the sidelines. I wanna make great music, too. I wanna be my own hero.”
You got the right idea. Now go make yourself great!!
yh sure, but you gotta try it before you say its your passion. just because first time having sex is beautiful you dont become a pornstar, same with other things
I talk and think about music more than the average teen. No one comes to me telling me about songs. If not a writer then im a damned dj. I like seeing how people react to music.
I also like sharing the emotions they get from it.
Ignore positive feedback if you want to commit suicide. It tells you what works.
HAHA. Yea, you and everyone else on this board, dude. You gotta work your butt off. You need connections and experience, which are two things you don’t have a chance of getting at the age of 16. Sorry to break it to you, but it’s just how the world turns.
Good luck with getting good quality productions on a laptop, comrade. I hope your mom buys you a badass one.
You have a long road ahead. I hope you are ready for thousands of hours on Youtube and gallons of coffee intake.
You think i cant get connections and experience at age sixteen? Connections are only an email/comment/i-know-them-by-association away! Ive already began talking to Asa a little bit. I email a singer thats worked with Singularity. Ive talked to a dubstep producer over the net, and another pystrance (or something similar to it) producer. Connections? Psh. Experience? Dont make me look up the age koan sound and asa begin. Pretty sure other producers began around that age two. With less support as i have (YouTube tutorials). I know youre trying tk be realistic but connections? Really? It only takes one person that knows a famous person.
Even without the help of big names you cant doubt the power of association. Im bound to strike a chord in someone causing them to mention my name on a video that a slightly bigger name watches very often. That producer may then look me up and post one of my songs on his Facebook, possibly ending with a big name seeing it and looking me up. How do you know for sure they wouldnt contact me? What? Im thinking too big to not have evidence? Well hows about ALL of us just save our opinions of how things will work out until i actually find out. Youre not helping me any. There is no more desensitizing to the pain of a dead dream you can give me that i dont already have. People earlier in the thread have already walked me through this. I know what could come. Ill be prepared to make connections. Im not so ignorant that id spam YouTube and think id get somewhere without links. Besides, i already know of three or four popular channels to submit music to. At this point, i only need advice on music making.
Hey man. I’m currently trying to learn how to navigate the business/label side of it right now as well. So anyone with links or ideas on that particular topic would be GREATLY appreciated.
But as for producing in general. The thing I’ve found is that you will probably spend a good deal of your time emulating different styles as you learn the ropes. And that’s good, because it teaches you how to achieve the sounds you hear. So in a way you’re copying but really what you’re doing is learning how to create what you hear. The whole point of this is that you’ll eventually understand the tools and have the ability to implement them in a way that fits YOUR style. And this is the key part.
You need to always be discovering what music is to you. Producing I think is as much about the message behind your music, and your own flavor as it is any programming or sound design or whatever. So always be exploring music and finding what you like and taking those intersting ideas and trying to find creative ways to take them to new levels. A huge part of it is getting the programs and tools down and understanding mixing etc, but an equally big part of it is thinking outside the box and having a vision for what it is you’re trying to create and being true to your own sound and vision, even if its not totally the hottest thing at the moment. You can still add elements of that style to stay relevant but you have to keep it real to yourself in order to get lost in the music and let it run its course and grow to all it can be.
That said, again, anyone with information or resources regarding publishing and advertising tracks and music please share with me either by direct message (which I can’t seem to find on this new layout) or by posting in this thread. Good luck!
@TheAudioMedium Thanks for everything you said.
You may want to try MrSuicideSheep’s music channel. He uploads great electronic music (and occasionally piano pieces) and allows tracks to be submitted. Thats one way to get a name out there. He lists the artist’s social media links in the description so im positive that channel will get you recognition.
He uploads heavy stuff like hard dubstep but very rarely. Mostly on the lines of liquid drum and bass, house, and melodic dubstep.
Awesome, thanks for the feedback. This is how it’s done! Like minded people helping each other out. This kind of thing is what moves the world in the direction it needs to be going. Lifting each other up as best you can and sharing your information for the benefit of everyone. Much love guys.
Try stalking the people you want to talk to. If you cant seem to get close enough to them by commenting on their videos, try emailing them or hitting them up on Facebook. Not sure if theyd respond to a personal message but catching them soon after they post a thread on their page seems like a very good idea. So far, ive been impressed with the way i get responses through email. I mostly stuck with that. Sometimes its hard to find emails but if you have trouble, just check to see if an artist that knows the person youre trying to get in touch with, or the artist themself, has a bandcamp account. Go to it, scroll to the bottom of the page, and you should see something that says “contact artist” or something like that. If they dont answer, they may be busy. You can always try again.
Remember. It only takes o.e person ti get to where you want. The stalking thing sounds weird but if you see a recurring face in many of a person’s pictures, try to contact that person and see if they can get you a conversation with the person you wanna speak to. I believe everyone on the forum has a touch of fame by association in them. We all know at least one person. That one person is your way through.
Not sure I believe this. Name one case where somebody became famous because of connections.
I’m fine with 4gb of RAM.
Please stop trying to be discouraging, you’re only making yourself look like the dick.
shouts out to this thread. dude asks for ‘knowledge’ and then pretty much tries to argue nearly everything said.
i’d imagine less than 5% of producers (if even that) are naturally talented enough to pick it up and get a release within the first year. is it possible? sure. is it realistic? definitely not. only you will know once you actually start producing, it’s not something we can really answer for you! no easy answers here i’m afraid, as others have said it can take a couple years just to get something that sounds good enough to you, let alone others. production is a long and rewarding road if you stay on path, good luck to you!
