Outlook Festival 2015

Loving reading the reports (esp yours Muncey)! Almost feels like i was there. I went from 2010 - 2013 but probably won’t ever go back for fear of it not living up to how it was, and being an old man now. Sounds like it’s still as good as ever (although nothing will ever replicate the vibes of 2010 imo)

I remember being absolutley blown away by a set from Kutmah in the rain in 2012. Mad spiritual experience. My favourite of many Outlook memories is Rodigan shouting ‘put up some fire up for the plane’ and 2000 people holding up their lighters as a plane swooped low over the dock in 2011(?). Spine tingling stuff. Loved every minute

I feel like a lot of people let their own good time be far too affected by those around them. As suspected, the Dimensions crowd was a bit more palatable but even the ropier end of Outlook didn’t fuss be because I didn’t let it. Just found a nice sounding spot with a bit of space and job was a good’un. A fair bit of the daytime/afternoon selection on the beach was pretty shit imo (both weeks). Though when Dimensions got it right (funk/soul/disco) it was banging, a lot better than Outlook. I got to spend a shift watching Jeremy Underground from the stairs, having it large in my high-vis which was great fun. Got to start my birthday at medi in Mungo’s followed by the Bandulu boat the next night, stepped off the boat straight into Flatbush Zombies and then DMZ 10 (which truth be told I was too spannered to recall at this point). The bandulu and Medi boat parties were both really good. Only heard Sinker once and it was on the medi boat. I don’t know how many people have heard but Gantz had a USB stick stolen on the medi boat. I was further back (again, space hunting) but a friend at the front said he saw a fella who he thought knew the medi crew pluck the USB and mooch off, only when he caught a word with Gantz it turned out they had no idea who he was. What a batty

Yeah I never really got the “bad crowd” end of the stick either. At one point a really really spangled couple chatted to a few of us and made fuck all sense and one guy shot me a dirty look when someone else barged into me with a pint in hand and he spilt some of it.
I had more friendly crowd vibes than nearly any System and certainly more than any DMZ ive been too.

The only stuff I wasnt super into was the hiphop, Flastbush zombies and Run the jewels, something about that stuff does not translate well to me on a huge ass stage. RTJ was the same for me at Glastonbury but a bunch of my group wanted to see it so I was happy to oblige.

Krupt Fm was pretty fucking funny, only bleak part was people “moshing” to Rhythm and Gash lol. Like parody of a parody type shit.

I never went to the beach part apart from once getting off our boat, we headed back and EZ was on, rammed to the hilt and then on the monday our friend Bevin was playing then our other apartment friends mate Noah but it seemed a nice enough place to chill. Pretty gutted I forgot about trying to go to the area where people do all the cliff jumping and shit. Next year tho!

You wot?!

Yeah Wolf mentioned it after Dimensions then I saw a few people posting pictures from this year. Theres like a rope bridge to some area via a forest or something. Im not 100% clued up on it though.

that was closed off the year i went :frowning:

It still is, people just go around the barricade.

1 BigUp

for sure makes sense, security was being pretty active on not letting you anywhere near any of the outer barricades tho. This was 2013

Ha, I left this post half-written since the festival and kinda forgot about it. Well if you’re up for some reading

Big ups on the boat party, it was big, didn’t really manage to catch up with anybody except Hirszu for a bit towards the end of the festival, it just felt like there was no time.

Went to see Kahn & Neek on the first night @ The clearing, some good tunes, but a lot of stuff just seemed a bit sameish. Caught the end of Egoless’ set, played some nice wobbly dubstep and we wanted to go to Medi at Mungo’s next, but by 11pm, the queue was just absurd, didn’t really expect that. So we turned around and ended up in the Fort Arena, where some guys were playing pretty eclectic mix of stuff, disco into dancehall into gangstarr etc. It was pretty fun. Sneak peak in the Ballroom (Sick stage, but rammed - would love to stay for Ant TC1 otherwise) and we headed to the harbour for Mount Kimbie DJ set which was a nice ending to the evening, didn’t really expect to hear Truly Dread there.

The boat was vibes too, really enjoyed Kaiju at the end, you can see me prancing around in the vid on the front right in the straw hat.

On friday, we began with Pinch b2b Distance who were pretty good, i actually enjoyed Pinch a bit more. Then caught a bit of Kode9 who opened with a skippy jukeish remix of 9 samurai, liked what i heard. He also dropped some trappy Rustie bit that went off a lot.
Went to see Fracture and Stray in the Mungo’s (no queue yay!). Both absolutely killed it, SP on mic was great as well.
The system in that arena is just :gunfinger: :gunfinger: :gunfinger:

Went to DMZ/Loefah, it was good, but i kinda regret missing half of Stray for it, especially given that they played for 2 and half hours. Mostly ‘greatest hits’ kind of stuff, Mala and Loefah especially pulled off some sick mixes, Coki not so much. Still good tho, Cay’s Crays remix when it started raining was jokes.

wanted to see the Skeptical next but at that point we were pretty tired and it looked like a storm was coming so we pussied out and called it a night. Really regret it now.

On saturday, we went to the medi boat, which was sick, they were all going b2b2b2b2b so there was nice variety going on, btw F_ck Mountain VIP is fucking sick.
The end of the boat was very hype, almost felt like the system is going to blow up. (Probably just redlining the mixer to hell)

It started to rain around 8 and we headed home to have a bit of rest, then went to see The Beatnuts with Jeru the damaja in the harbour, pretty good, but hyping the crowd into making noise after EVERY track is annoying as hell. Went to see Chimpo and LEVELZ for a bit next, which was sick and then back to the harbour for Run the Jewels. ok, but a bit too much sameish beats and lyrics for me.
Then it was Oneman in Void which was sick, although the sound seemed to clip or something cause it was really harsh.
Then we kinda went here and there, wanted to catch Loe’s jungle set at the Moat, Digital before him was very sick, the system there really did the music justice. It seemed Loefah had some technical issues, as he started like 20 mins late and got a mad skipping/sound glitches/gargling whatever in the middle of his first mix, happened on the DMZ stage too.
By this point it was about we decided to call it a day, as we were pretty much dead hanging against the wall at the Moat.
Krust’s Warhead sounded unreal on that system.

We had two boats on Sunday - Antisocial at 13 and Toddla T takeover at 16:15

ASE was just sick, Kromestar played standardly good and clean set, he was on for about 45 mins and then it was Quest b2b Silkie b2b Chef, pure quality, managed to get to the front about halfway through. Quest’s selection was top notch and the mixing was on point Mere Sher VIP > R2D6 :gunfinger: Silkie was sick as well, the guy’s got moves lol, fell in love with this tune. Chefal was pulling some mad 3 deck blends, Under Control + Free Focus remix + MRL (?) was massive. + red eyed Kromestar on the mic. All in all, good vibes.
The boat was late a bit though, so I thought we’ll maybe miss the Toddla T boat, which we didn’t, it was about 30 mins late, because there wasn’t anyone who was supposed to play :cornlol:
I think this was the smallest boat, It was RAMMED left to right, but really vibes,
Toddla T started off with some dancehall, then it was Mella Dee with his 130 break stuff, and then Chimpo who was looking kinda lean lol, he absolutely shelled it, man’s got like a billion dubs and specials. Then it was a pretty random B2B, DRS and Black Josh on the mic were killing it.
Stellar last tune selection as well
Went back home to the appartment after that, a quick nap, bcs we were dead and back for Madlib and Pete Rock. Madlib was fucking sick, he’s got a really weird way of mixing but it just flows together nicely, pretty much on the same wave as his productions. Sick sick sick visuals also.
Pete rock was quality as well, played awesome soul/funk mixed with a lot of Boombap and some Wu-Tang. He kinda ruined it by beatjuggling every tune starting 1hr into his set. That shit is fun, but not for an hour.
Anyway some ~60yo lady was feeling it in the back of the crowd a lot, I got a nice beer spray from a guy who was biting cans (???) after a minute or two he had a safety radius of a few meters around him, clever way to make space in the dance.

After that we were totally out and headed home for a nice sleep, finally went to the beach for a swim the next day, and left on Tuesday with obligatory McD stop in Slovenia lol

All in all, IT WAS FUKIN GREAT, gutted i missed some acts but that was inevitable i guess, the only negatives were shit food (maybe picked the worst stalls idk), overpriced drinks and dust although that didn’t really bother me much. Heard stories of ppl coughing up some black mess though.
Everything else was spot on, the staff were nice too.
Most likely going next year as well, hoping to meet up some of you properly there, it was hard syncing with GF and 2 groups of friends though

I wanna make a little collage of all the shaky videos with distorted sound i took, gonna post it here laters.

goddamn, that took almost an hour to finish

Nice report m8,

I can’t really imagine getting mashed everyday and powering through to the morning, I’d be dead. As for the taxis, book an appartment in Stinjan in advance, can’t recommend that enough, 15 min. walk from the festival site and you’re home.

I found Pinch/Distance a bit dull apart from some standout tracks it was more or less the same stuff, not bad, but nothing special imo, so i kinda ‘get’ the crowd. But fuck it, just have a skank if you’re feeling like it

I’m feeling similar about the Loefah/DMZ set, drunk Crazy D shouting nonstop in the mic didn’t help (IIRC he was even spitting some bars over Antiwar dub) although Loefah saved it in my eyes, good mixing, + selection (even if predictable) I got to hear his tunes at least, seen Mala (twice) and Coki during the last year and tbh i don’t recall they played any Loefah tune.
…And he played Dub period by Skream

It definitely felt like most of the dubstep DJs were playing the same stuff, at least 2 or 3 tunes you’ve heard before per set. I didn’t mind it that much really, one of few opportunities for me to hear some of those dubs on a quality system.

btw. Compa mixed Sinker into Poison Dart (lol) on the Medi boat >>>> hype as fuck

ok. I’m gonna stop spamming this thread now

Ha he did a similar thing at the arena. Was it really backed up at 11pm? thats crazy. We just rolled right in during what was supposed to be Jack sparrow but was actually Compa and hung out all night.

nice one

  • why lol at poison dart?

  • wouldn’t expect anyone to draw for warhead, that sounds like it was sick, you said loefah played that one?

  • what does toddla t even play?

“obligatory “jrkhnds bigging up skeppy” post”

& yours!

Will definitely check that out, cheers! We wasn’t that bothered about it… just needed to prepare a bit more.

He played Poison Dart, pulled it then double dropped it with something but I’m sure he didn’t play Sinker. I was there for his whole set waiting for it; if he played it and I missed it I’m a grade a tnuc lol. The queue was absolutely insane when we left, right back to the end and into the main area part… it’d have taken hours because it was one out one in. Not a chance I’d have waited in that queue, glad we decided to go straight away and stay their most of the night.

lol because of that ‘everybody playing the same tunes’ thing, heard it left and right everywhere.
Compa played it towards the end of the Medi boat and as we arrived to the harbour it was playing on the big stage as well :]

Same thing with Eskimo from Garden and Arija stages at one point.

Toddla T played a lot of dancehall and some ‘happy’ stuff iirc, can’t really remember i think he had a Sean Paul dubplate spesh in there or something. That was a proper Sunday boat party :]

It was just absolute pressure, Moat is a very sick stage, that said, i’ve been down there for 45 mins during the 4 days

[/quote] yea, there was queue right up to the Void entry

fuck off

(: Was he good?)

yeah you do hear the big hits a lot at outlook- i luv u/skeng/ poison dart/midnight request line

one time i was taking some time on one of the toilets in the campsite but near the beach bar and swear heard all 4 in a row

Heard Pulse X enough to last me a lifetime at Outlook. At one point I said “Pulse X is shit” when someone dropped it and someone walking passed me laughed and said “I’m sick of hearing it too”.

def add Skream - I (loe Remix) to that list, heard that soo many times when I went

didn’t reach this year, but I have yet to hear a bad set from the man. Last year was a bit meh-ish though since he went b2b with Dub Phizix and their mixing styles are very different. It’s weird to pair up a guy playing hype tunes in quick cuts with another DJ who’s mainly known for his long, drawn-out blends and hypnotic sets.
