MBP 2017 / Mojave, yeah apparently from what I googled it is “normal” behaviour since it switches to dedicated gpu once you connect a monitor and the fans go wild, so been sticking to just the small screen when producing
check how phat my drums sound now, cant even write a track anymore just smoke a doob at 12am and sit until 11pm massaging my ears with lovely rich perc sounds
that’s actually fat as hell and sounds really oldschool too. nice going mate. it’s rare to find any modern garage tracks that have that classic sound in them. you could be my favourite new producer lol
Dawww
Struggling for like 15 minutes to find whats sounding wrong with a stereo delay then finally realizing you left the master bus on mono the whole time…
crazy how much you can focus in on a particular thing and not notice something as obvious as literally the entire song has no stereo anymore lmfao
Dude just months ago I was in the final stretch of my uni dissertation equivalent sound tech work, and I bought a third party replacement cable for my KRK headphones that I listened to music and mixed on for days before realizing was incompatible and turning the signal mono
Fully imagined myself hearing the effect whenever I put a stereo widener or delay on. Embarassing.
To be fair, judging stereo information on headphones is horrible. It’s what I dislike about mixing on
headphones. I don’t find I have that much trouble judging reverbs with them.
put one or more filter envelopes on ur kicks folks! Make it sound sick before it even leaves the sampler and ur job becomes much easier later on. If you’re pissing about too much with tweaking distortion and compression on your kick its probably cus its sounding bad in the sampler itself.
also if youre still just dropping kick wavs on ur timeline stop doing that, its all about samplers
Good advice.
All my kicks come from the analog rytm but I spend quite some time tweaking it
before tjoeping it into Ableton.
yeah but thats probably even better if u can be arsed
took me way too long to realize a kick sound itself will have rhythmic “information” before its even put in context of other drums. The exact way the pitch, amp and filter envelopes modulate is important and tuning it to work with ur beat pattern does wonders. Sometimes I’ll wonder why drums sound bad and its the kick letting off a sluggish bassy release that needs tighening.
Totally
It’s like with Pure Science tracks… before there’s anything going on, it’s already destroying the club:
What sampler do you use?
I use the stock reaper sampler but i dont like it so much.
I always use samplers. I don’t program drums on a timeline in audio.
Logic just updated and replaced its ancient sampler from 2007, so using the stock logic one, as well as alchemy which is way more advanced, but usually not necessary for kicks.
Unfortunately Ive had little success finding good freeware samplers, but I was limited to AU format plugins ofc, if you’re on PC you may fare better.
But any sampler with good modulation patching options and good sounding filters will suffice. The crucial thing is its gotta let you use full ADSR envelopes that you can map to pitch and filter (better if theres 2 filters you can set to parallel).
If you figured out how to access those options, do this:
Tune your kick up an octave (12 notches on most interfaces)
Map the SECOND ADSR envelope to the pitch - not the 1st one thats affecting the volume/amp envelope already.
Set the pitch modulation MINUS a full octave - So this is the maximum amount that ADSR2 will pull the pitch.
Set the Sustain of ADSR 2 to full - The 2nd envelope is now cancelling out the pitch being set an octave up so you should have the kick sound you started with.
Now you can adjust the attack, decay and release of ADSR2 to bend the pitch of your kick to your liking. You can make it a slow, soft boom or a sharp little stab or anywhere in between or beyond.
You will also probably have to readjust ADSR1 to cut the kick right so it doesnt flop around from the ADSR2 modulation where you dont want it
Then also map the filter cutoffs, resos, filter mix, drive etc to the envelopes and you’ll have smth banging
1)why has noone sampled a bunch of monkeys howling and then autotuned it onto a house track
2)taken an enya track, reversed it and put some drums on that bitch
Do it!
@_ronzlo should go and record this to sample
Spent some time with the System-1 today digging into all the little things I didn’t know how to do with it… turns out there’s a few lmao. Honestly when I first got it I wasn’t amazed with it but it really does sound good once you get a handle on what it does and doesn’t do well, and the modulation options are actually pretty strong (which I didnt fully appreciate because theres a fair amount of “hold this button then turn this” functions that I didn’t know about) I’m appreciating it more now and its kind of making me curious about the System-8… if I can ever justify the purchase hahaha
