Production Thoughts

Ah shit you reminded me - I recorded these last month in Cyprus in a stone event hall on the grounds of a monastery. Phone video so it’s not the best quality but it was a beautiful reverb space.

Just rip stuff out of youtube videos. Or rip movies to your laptop and rip the audio out of them.

Oh for sure. Only said that cause i’ve got some big sample packs of various single shot foley sounds and theyre fun to play with. Wouldn’t pay for them or anything though lol its easy to find sample packs. and I’ve definitely done my share of ripping youtube audio for sampling purposes as well

see if you can get in a nuclear power station cooling tower

Idk where else to put this:

I currently have this system in my room
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.philips.co.uk/c-p/FWM608_12.amp/mini-hi-fi-system
It’s still quite solid, but it’s about 6 years old and it’s starting to show a bit of wear in the sound (mainly the sub). I could easily some more use out of it for a good while, but I’m just wondering if inevitably it would be worth overhauling the whole system or if I should get a different sub in the next year or so?

Subwoofer specs:
8"
6 ohms
180 Watts

The connection

I messed so much with my rokits placement to make the panning and sub response right - I even moved my whole desk few decimeters towards center of the room, also I made sure there’s equal distance from left monitor to left wall and from right to the right wall. And all this shit didn’t help. Then I searched a panning test on youtube and found out my right rokit is just 2db lower in volume than left! Luckily, there is a global volume knob on the back of each, so I just made the right one +2db and it’s fixed now! Jeez, why didn’t I try this in the first place.

So wide does not equal stereo?
I thought wide meant stereo…
You can have a wide sound that is also mono?
:uhhh:

I have my bass/sub & kicks mono always, and then all other sounds I adjust this slider to sit them in the mix where I want them. I always thought wider meant more stereo… and the closer to mono you go, the more narrow the sound

Yeah you’re right 100%, sorry if the wording was confusing. Was using wide and stereo interchangeably. What I meant by that was if I wanted to take an already wide stereo sound and then make it mono.

As far as the width slider in Reaper I’m not familiar, but I imagine you’re right on what it’s doing. Only thing to be aware of is presumably if the sound source is mono in the first place that width slider won’t do anything. Also if you have a stereo sound and just set the width to zero you’ll just be summing the left and right channels to the center (I imagine it would work this way, but if someone else knows better then please correct me) and that could cause some funny stuff from phase cancellation, which is why I mentioned isolating a single channel instead and making that the centered mono sound, rather than just dialing the width to zero with a utility/imager type deal. Might not be a significant issue in a lot of cases

Edit: also I think you replied to this in a different thread my man

Let’s not even confuse @sleeps by talking about mid/side next lol

:joy: shit can be brutal it took a while for a lot of it to fully sink in but I love the technical bits that’s honestly what gets me excited about it. Took an audio engineering course for that exact reason still not sure what I’m gonna do with it (career-wise) though lolll

Haha yeah man, one small step at a time please!!

Cool man thanks for the response. Ill look into that bit…

The best test for all that is probably to try summing your whole mix to mono. Not sure how you’d do it in Reaper but there should be a way. The reason being is that if your track gets played over a mono system that’s when the problems will be most apparent. Definitely had times where I’ve made a lead or some other important sound very stereo, then when you try the whole mix in mono it sounds super phasey and hollow and often a lot more buried in the mix than when listening in stereo. In that case it’s not usually that you have to make it completely mono, but either use less stereo insert fx or mix in more dry signal or something like that. If I’m starting from a softsynth preset I’ll usually switch off any doubling/stereo stuff or drastically reduce it and then redo that myself for that reason, lots of synth presets are just loaded with effects which sounds cool on its own but in a mix can be an issue. If it’s not a very forward sound in the mix, background things, ambience pads and the like, it’s probably not as big an issue. But main point listen to the mix in mono and see what’s different, sometimes things will practically disappear. And listen on a bunch of different systems in general if possible but obv depends what you have on hand or not

I’m trying to build a phat rack, anybody got any tips? I have OTT and saturation knob installed so I’ll use those inside it, but other than that I don’t know what to put inside.

EDIT: also some minor EQ

A hardware rack? @cyclopian is probs your man to ask

There’s a mono button on the master channel fader, very handy.

(not my pic)

No no no, software. Using FL’s patcher

I noticed I can’t do anything which requires significant efforts and focus (like music) if I’m not feeling fine both physically and mentally. I don’t understand how some people can “channel” their pain or psychosis into “creative powers”. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

The kind of pain they’re talking about is probably much more intense than what ppl typically think they experience (although it could be relative to their tolerance of it as well.)

Haven’t you ever been in a funky headspace tho and sat down and started jamming and just felt better?

What makes me feel better when I’m bad is experiencing something external which makes me shift from my personal thoughts and feelings to others. So it’s a consumption. And if I’m creating something, I experience my own thoughts and feelings more intense. Maybe it’s a matter of being an introvert.

ignore the wack music, but this tutorial just blew my mind, watch my mixdowns get like 100x cleaner now, I don’t know how I didn’t realise that it was so simple

Lol, I tried to download another rack from these guys before, so I signed up and it didn’t work.

I emailed them and they got back to me and said the download link wasn’t configured properly and they sent me a new link.

It still didn’t work. Their permission settings were wrong. I gave up after that. I’m on their email list now though.

I will try once again to see if it works but if not they are going to get roasted.
