I think there’s a difference between coming off “strong” and coming off “as a person” (ie free of traditional gender associations). I’ve never really understood why bucking the traditional female pigeonhole has to result in taking on an obnoxious alpha male role (and likewise for men bucking the traditional male pigeonhole overshooting into a submissive female role).
I told you guys this story once before…nothing to do with music…
but it’s a good one - I really felt the “female problem” this day…
I was re-engineering the front flower beds at my parents house…
and went to the hardware store for a bunch of mulch…
and I was loading the trailer with the bags I had bought…
and this older guy stopped and insisted on loading the stuff for me…
I literally had - a very polite sort of argument with him
about how I was ok loading the stuff - and he insisted that I shouldn’t be doing it.
so - he ended up loading my stuff - (and not in a feminine conducive way….mind you)
because I wasn’t going to buff up…
and tell him to fuck off and get away from my stuff…
The overall effect the situation had was…
me feeling guilty about taking on a project…
because somehow - not by even the slightest suggestion from myself…
I ended up putting extra work on some guy.
I think they call that a gallantry issue…
to fault a man for his chivalry - would make me the most horrible woman ever.
thats the answer innit - people are concervative… but yeah it’s dissapointing like how same sex marriages in the context of a church didn’t spark something revolutionairy
but struggling to find a place will usually lead to a vacant spot and not a new place - if that isn’t just way too hobby philosophical to even post lol -… but theres a smidge of explanation in that i think
By way of this other thread, interesting quote by don dada Oris Jay about dubstep:
“If it weren’t for Sarah Lockhart and Mary Anne Hobbs, there wouldn’t be any of this. The boys were running around, but these two women brought it all together.” – Oris Jay
Now, for the one big question… Does any of this shit matter at all? Because the lack of estrogen in the electronic community sure as hell isn’t affecting mine or anyone else’s music.
To say this in this age where black people are harrassed and murdered by the police like they where fifty years ago in the states AGAIN, is more than enough proof…
I get your intention and its cool, but its just not correct.
everyone needs representatives or role models (tho that is shit term)
I’m black…and positive discrimination is still discrimination. To say that we need more black cops who are not as qualified as some white cops who are qualified is just stupid and vice-versa. Plus I’m from the UK and I don’t give a fuck about America and its propaganda.
And that is just another form of racism to say “oh look we have more black cops now so we are not racist.” Everyone deserves the same employment treatment. No one should get special treatment.
