I saw a band called the smith westerns playing in DC in my last year of school. Went with two friends and it was odd because the one who recommended it usually has a pretty sound taste in music, but when we got there, there was a bunch of 12-15 year old kids. I think we were actually the oldest people in Black Cat that night. We stayed for about 30 mins, sitting at the very back of the room trying to avoid the swarms of tweens loafing about and faux-moshing, then we went out for cigarettes and decided to get pizza and skate while we still had time.
Shlohmo was fairly good, but there was this really dodgy group standing next to us; Iâm pretty sure each of the guys made out with each of the girls. And then at the end, one of them flipped shlohmo off and he didnât come back for an encore. One of the girls was quite fit though, I danced with her a little during one of the opener sets, before all the weird kissing shit happened in her group. Apparently one of the guys in that group was living in the same dorm as my friend, and he was in the lounge one day doing homework and overheard him yelling at his mum on the phone and calling her a âgreedy bitchâ because she made him return a $500 jacket that he bought with money she gave him for food.
Best one was probably at the same spot, it was Mount Kimbie. Very special night, I skipped prom for that lol.
King Krule was good too, audience was a bit wank though. I was behind these oddly tall, but definitely q. a bit younger than me, girls, so I couldnât see very much. I think they sang along to âeasy easyâ and then just stood there texting for the rest of the night. There was a group of about 5 people who actually knew his music and sang along, we convened in the middle and jumped with our arms around eachotherâs shoulders towards the end of the set.
Airhead and Trim were kinda fun, not a brilliant âperformanceâ (it was a DJ set) but the selection was good and crowd atmosphere was on point, so special again.
Also went to this one random charity punk gig in DC and saw a band called Trophy Wife, they were great. Iâd never heard of them, but I bought a shirt at the end of their set.
Baths was great, heâs kinda funny to watch (my sense of humour, probably not yours) on some of the sadder songs because he gets soooooooooooooo emotional. He winked at one of my mates too.
