The Original Growl Bass Thread (Official)

wow that sounds dope man

It needs further post processing, and adjustments for taste. But I’m fairly sure that’s how they would have gone about it. I’d put up the patch, but that’s not really learning anything.

Jo in order to get the sound what do u think I should change about my patch ? Maybe i have too much resonance on the filter?

Maybe, and if your using FL that phaser has a frequecny sweep knob, turn it off so its at a static position. Next turn the Min and Max depth up to around 7-9, what ever your liking and then the feed back up to about 5-7. I like the stereo at 0 but you can adjust that and the dry wet to your liking

I like the kind of riddim sound it has. Those are the only sounds i have problems with ^^

Cool^^ don’t know bout that. i don’t listen to his music

@Ascenic Yeah I thought so too, but lemme tell ya. Desembra makes the best of what he’s got man o. o

Fun fact, Anime actually doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. And he is also wrong with his Tweet haha. A lot of people think they’re heading in the right direction but at the same time you’re also quite far off, try NOT listening to anyone else and looking at any else’s tutorials. The way I learned was ignoring all the so called conventional methods, otherwise 1,000’s of us would’ve figured it out by now wouldn’t we

Yeah isn’t that how the terror squad sound was made apparently?

No disrespect intended, but you’re obviously more experienced than most and have gone through all the playing around and discovering for yourself, why not share small bits of information with people? Little things like: “Think outside the box” could mean literally anything, this is a forum for people that are seeking to learn more, yeah there’s a few 13 year old producers here trying to just be skrillex, but the majority are here to contribute and learn. Almost everyone knows about OTT, it’s no secret. Must DIE uses it on everything, Skrillex, Virtual Riot, Barely Alive. You’d have to be blind to not know it’s used.

Something more specific like: “I’ve always found Vocodex followed by OTT to sound good”, “bla bla bla in Ableton really helped take my growls to the next level” really goes a long way when you’re stuck in a hard place. Trying to learn and discover new things isn’t funny, it’s people trying to work together to help better each other.

Am i headed the right way Decembra and or Spitfya

These are just Virtual Riot growls man…

sounding good bruh

I understand that, and it’s beyond impressive that you managed to discover how to make those sounds by yourself without outside information. However, simply because there wasn’t anyone around to help guide you to the ‘next level’, doesn’t mean you can’t be the one to try and help others. You’d have to agree that a lot of the discoveries that made you think: “fuck, this sounds damn good” were happy accidents? And happy accidents aren’t that common, it’d be why you and Spitfya are currently the people that have gotten the closest to a Skrillex growl, whilst everyone else sounds like shit. - It’s not people wanting to directly steal yours or his sounds (well atleast that’s not my intention) but just wanting a bit of guidance to go further.

I’ve been ‘producing’ for about 4/5 years now, and the best information I could give anyone wanting to make a skrillex growl, would be to not go for some crazy sounding FM8 bass, start off with a simple sound and, use distortion, then compression, eq’ing, eq modulation and then a bit of saturation. - I know from how his growls sound that he uses OTT, a bitcrusher and in the case of First of The Year, a vocoder. - But fuck, knowing this doesn’t bring me any closer to the sound, I think I’ve fucked around with almost every Ableton effect and still no closer. (which btw for anyone reading, maybe an amp effect is used… because I got cool results)

If you’re not comfortable with sharing small things in public, maybe we could talk a bit privately? I started this thread because I want to learn, not steal. I’d love to hear some things from you.

Making a growl it’s just a small part of a song. I’d focus more on sound design other elements or song arrangement, that’s what makes a great song…not growls. Those are my 2 cent. Even if the man explains how he gets his growls, what’s the point? Everyone makes growls, you’ll be the next producer that makes growls…and then?

Jo Like Spider said we dont even want Desembra and Spit to tell us exactly how to make theire growls we just want little tips no one has tought about befor like @Desembra in a privat message you told me the exact same thing but it would be cool if you would give an example of “thinking outside of the box” because damn I dont know what you mean by that ? Is bitcrushing a Voice and putting milliones of phasers on it not thinking outside the box too? Look I dont want to be rude but some small tips no one has done befor would be cool oh and btw. @Spitfiya your Growls are Massive right? How do you get them so talky? is it a certain waveform? (Maybe gentlee speech?)

That is my opinion on this! Like I said I really like Desembra and Spit’s music but some small tips wouldnt hurt anyone  I hope I didnt offend anyone if so I am really sorry and I dont want to offend anyone  thx

Well, I don’t want to insult your intelligence or anything. But you do realise where you are right? “The Official GROWL BASS Thread 2015” - This thread is specifically for the topic of growl basses, I don’t think anyone here thinks that you can make a song just out of a good growl, that’s not the discussion or purpose of this.

I will post a patch soon ^^

Might as well throw my own 2 cents in even though it won’t make a difference xD.

My biggest breakthroughs HAVE been discovered on my own accidentally. HOWEVER, the catalyst for the environment that allowed me to make these discoveries have been tiny tips. Small tips help me think outside of the box and inspire me to try new things. They spark ingenuity in me.

Probably most artists transpose their sounds especially growls a lot.
