The Original Growl Bass Thread (Official)

I use EQ 8, primarily bands 3 & 4 get really squirrely for me. I imagine that you could get more artistic about it, but honestly my fave result has 3 & 4 bouncing and moving through the Hz in the low mid-range. As I look at them I think it looks like it should paint some shitty modern art.

Reason I have said nothing is because the last time I did, someone stole the information from me and claimed it as theres

You know who you are T_T…

Secondly, I have no idea what to say or how to put it without simply revealing it all. Any hint would be an incredibly vague incomplete puzzle that would make no sense to any of you.

I do however, not mind giving feedback on growls.

One simple thing for example would be to just tell us what Fm8 (as far as you use fm8? I am not sure) waveforms you use (the most) for your growls because that is one of the things I am stuck with, oh and does your fm8 patch move/vowel on its own or is it a static patch and all the movement comes from the fx?

On that note, could you give me some feedback on my growls please? <3

That’s one misconception about growls, you can use anything that can produce a sine wave. It really makes no difference. Use what you know well basically. My raw patches sound very shitty, like any unprocessed generic massive patch basically. If you’ve got a patch that sounds like something from 2007, then that’s a good base sound. You need to make sure it’s gritty to an extent, don’t overdo the sound, make it as simplistic as you can, you can always crank that wavetable morph knob up later once you’ve got your basic sound.

As for voweling, EQ formants are very useful. Sometimes in FM8, I would make a phaser occure in the patch along with some other specific things to generate a tone. If you generate a slight tone before the processing even occures your tone will be stronger by the time your processing ends with the final sound. Anything you do is accentuated in the final stage. Small changes can make a huge difference in the patch.

I’m not gonna say everything that I do, but those are SOME things. In answer to your last question, yes, A lot of the movement if not ALL is generated by processing.

Yes 100%

However, would caveat that in my opinion sine waves do not make good growls. They are great as a base layer, but you need some kind of sharpness to your sound in order to create more formants (which will make your distortion unit much more effective and sonicly-pleasing). Try combining with a square/triangle into a hybrid type wave. This is why I think FM8 is so effective at producing growls, you can really get creative with the level of grit in your sound.

Hey

Have any opinions on this particular growl which i made on Massive?

is it too distorted? or too boring or something?
Had to leave the guitar lead (although tweaked it ever so slightly more quiet) and beat when i rendered that clip from my last project so it would sound cooler and have that compression the kick makes

see dude that is enough for me thanks sooo much man!

Got a little bored and made another SMNS Growl in Fm8

Growl is nice but please dont use that much distortion !

Hey Guys!
so I played with Fm8 yesterday and today for like 5 hours and got this: https://clyp.it/d2rcgv2v

my Question now would be what is my growl lacking and how can I fix it ?

my Question manly goes to people like @Desembra @Spitfya @SpiderPubes and @KosmonautOfficial

but if anyone else got any suggestions keep em comming !

The bass that I posted was originally a really shitty bass in massive. Just a Groan 1 wt and additive V wt with a bandpass.

After that I have crazy EQ modulation, distortion, Vocodex, more distortion, multiband compression, phaser, and OTT.

Here is just massive then after my FX https://clyp.it/vfqkmlms

Hope this helps man  If you have anymore questions feel free to ask

wow holy fuck dude ok thank you I will try that

Thank you for the before and after, now I know my original bass is way too distorted. Tbh idk what im doing in fm8, but I hope to get better at it.

Ohh yeah bruh no worries  and yeah what I would do if I were you is just start with Massive and put OTT on it and some distortion and then pick your wavetable and start messing around with it. I also like using the bandpass followed by the bandreject.

I find that once you figure out how to make your growl in serum or massive go to FM8. I am a very visual learner so seeing everything that I am doing in serum really helps me understand what is going on.

An example of a melodic robo growl that I made in Sytrus. What are good ways of making this growl better? https://soundcloud.com/deconstrukmusic/melodic-robo-growl-drop/s-pGcR6

I’d start by getting rid of that massive reverb.

Toning down on the reverb seemed to help. It probably didn’t help that I had a pad layered over the growl when I uploaded that drop. I forgot to mute it.
