I’d start by not worrying too much about how the base of the growl sounds, as Spitfya said above, a really shitty bass can turn into a great growl. You’ve got to care about your post-processing chain. Start of with something stupidly dumb, hell, even use a modern talking oscillator in massive. Then go through all of Ableton’s effects and just see which ones sound cool, try new things. There’s no definitive way to make growls, Virtual Riot makes his growls different to Barely Alive, and they both make them differently to Skrillex. But all 3 of them sound fucking great. On YouTube there is dozens of livestreams by Virtual Riot that are immensely helpful, and they helped me take my growls from something absolutely piss poor to something more decent.
Thanks a lot dude! Really helped me I will check out those streams
Hey man thanks for the advice to check out Virtual Riot, awesome stuff
I think I am doing something wrong but I dont know what? https://clyp.it/de2t0zgg
yo you just gotta put in work and make good producers want to work and learn from/with you. I know all you wanted was tips, but some things you have to figure out by yourself. The information you want to know probably took Desembra and other really good producers hours, days, or even months of fucking around to make them unique. All I gotta say is learning to create things by yourself will make you better. If you put in the work, you will make amazing things and people will come to you with similar questions. Then you will understand why saying no is the right thing to say
Made a growl and I put an ableton vocoder on it and got this xD https://clyp.it/gfg4rssb
hahahhahahah
Still got rekt tho
Are there any examples out there of the post processing to make a killer growl? Any videos?
Unfortunately, I’ve seen nothing that is really worthwhile in the form of tutorials for post-processing, it’s kinda’ just something you learn along the way. Vocodex and OTT are both great though, if you haven’t used them already.
Also, I was playing around with a Spitfya remix and replaced (I think) all the bass hits with my own, and I suppose my growls are getting a fair bit better. https://clyp.it/xbbnjzdm
Just messed around a bit yesterday for my next remix, i just can’t seem to get my growls quite right as planned https://clyp.it/msuyeroh
Should i just add some vocodex sample modulation or something? maybe try out FM8 instead of Massive that i use always?
Man, I wouldn’t worry about using different synths. Stick to massive, no new synth will suddenly make your growls amazing. It just takes practice and time, try new things, watch a couple tutorials, download a preset pack and do some inspecting.
The hook of his track is"This is my song"…lol… he used a lot of my growls without my consent…
But finally that doesn’t matter…
trying to remake the Syndicate Growl
can i get some tips? so i can post a tutorial on this
Dude holy fuck how do you get your growls so wobbly ? like when I try to make a “wooble” with my growl it sounds so “sharp” and choppy but yours just flows so well
hey guys
i shared the full project (ableton 9) for a shitty song i made. the links are in my reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/comments/3y1gim/free_ableton_9_dubstep_project_entire_song/
theres at least one growl in there, but maybe some of you could learn some other stuff from it
Yes, i was getting really tired of the sound Massive puts out always so gave a second try on sound design in FM8 but with all the knowledge already from other stuff i was able to almost immediately make this type of crunchy growl:
i really like the crunchiness FM8 brings by on it’s own from the more free oscillator grid thingy rather than adding some distortion in Massive, also i have gotten into sound design on Serum now for other more metallic dubstep sounds but as far as i know currently, Serum ain’t bringing that much of an difference compared to Massive, now just have to practice and test out stuff until i am able to make proper dubstep at some point with some music worthy growls and stuff, Don’t want to focus only on Orchestral although i should focus more on it too, and of course on both of them mushed up together as one
Guys holy fuck! can we please talk about the Growl in this: https://soundcloud.com/barelyalive/rudeboy-the-raindeer (I know this song is supposed to be a joke) damn this Growl dude is this massive maybe ?
i would guess FM8 perhaps, just recently got into it and i’m beginning to notice the difference in it compared to Massive on sound design with the crunchiness and all, take a look at my growl on the video i just uploaded on youtube that i designed just now, care for an opinion?
