Yeah agree on this, that Hessle set from Freerotation they posted was quite boring tbh.
Pearson Sound’s RA mix from must be a couple of years ago was quality start to finish, and varied. I saw him playing all night a few weeks ago and it was more like that, so maybe it’s worse when they’re all together, they try to out-obscure house each other a bit. Not hating though, they’re still good, just like you say not so adventurous any more, especially rhythmically
Figure, Zomboy, Flux Pavillion - Anything else that came out around the time people trying to ride the rager/edm comeup were doing that really fast panning 16th note arpegio cut on bar 4 or 8. Anything that is mastered super loud and doesnt have dynamic range is in its own way qualified to be in here and overhyping itself trying too hard for me to take it seriously as well. That was the worse part of it all tbh, for me and the 3 or 4 other people that listened to dubstep back then who also owned a volume knob. This thread is even overhyped and cringe, im fucking wasting my time here. Im gona go talk shit about you guys to wolf on snapchat now. Fagoats. You dont know music.
I think Tic, Dread and Space Cash are exactly the tunes that should be in this thread. For the majority they’re held up to be the best tunes in the scene in the past 5+ years… if people aren’t feeling them but the majority hold them up to be god-like… thats essentially the definition of overrated.
I think Midnight was overrated… that, for a long time, was THE loefah dub. I think its less overrated now cause its been released and most people have realised Woman is far superior.
even as butthurt as i am about not getting it, midnight is still The loefah tune for me, that bwamp bwoom bwoom bwooom just is dubstep for me
listening to those old rips with task chatting about dmz/fwd this week and youngsta mixing in request line at the end still gets me hyped and a reminder of how fucking amazing this genre has been at times
ha ha, really? the dubstep bubble bursting seemed to hit brosteppahs much harder than the truheds, thought Doctor P and them would be signing on by now.
Unfortunately the majority of dubstep gigs out in LA are more brostep oriented in general. There are new nights being put together that support the deep sound, we just had Tunnidge, and before that Dark Tantrums and Kaiju, so it’s coming back, it’s just not as good as it was even 3 years ago, when you had Jakes headlining in huge sold out warehouses downtown.(just as an example)
But i think thats my argument, they are held up because they are deservedly some of the most important/striking tunes of this era. But i think my argument is biased as i can remember the impact & reaction of them getting played out in the early days before they got battered, which always gives a tune a bit of a safe-spot in memory & distance from analysis. I do think theyre genuinely great compositions though.
Like Miracles Remix is another good example, despite that getting CANED & wheeled for about 18 months by Mala/Commodo/Kahn it still gets a thumbs up after the early-doors damage
Yeah theres two different types of ‘overrated’… stuff thats rated but is actually shit or not as good or overrated because its highly rated but personal preference is ‘meh, its okay’.
I don’t think any of those tunes mentioned are overrated but if I did listen to one and think ‘its okay but nothing special’ then by default I’d have to think it’s overrated.
The key part of the word is rated… which all those tunes are. I think most people agree those are great tunes but if, for example, Tic is someones least favourite LAS tune they’re entitled to think Tic is overrated.
Sometimes thinking a tune is overrated is just not ‘getting it’ and howevre cliche and cringey the argument of ‘hear it on a system’ is… its often true. Listen to any of those on laptop speakers and you aint gunna think they’re groundbreaking.
This thread is essentially picking those worldies that you don’t personally think are god-like. So inevitably you’re gunna get tunes like those 3 in it.
Also agree on AWD. It’s absolutely incredible and it did so much for the genre, but i think in relation to the rest of Mala’s stuff it doesnt come close
