these basses don’t have enough vocodex
i’m probably late on this, but i watched a video of virtual riot making growl basses using percussion samples. completely blew my mind and also sold me on serum. I know where my next paycheck is going.
hahha yeah man that stream was awesome Serum is definitely my favorite synth
Yeah it needs some filtering. If you do it correctly, you can get some vocal movement and that’ll give this more character. When you make growls, you pretty much need some sort of filter to move the sound and give it a vocally kinda sound that people usually chase when making these noises. What DAW are you in?
This a GREAT source sound however… further post-processing and this could be a killer sound.
Here’s a growl I made for a track I’m working on, it’s made in Serum. I can provide details if anyone wants, I’m really just looking for feedback tho. I’m new to making bass music honestly. smile_cat
I think they’re nice but I’m really a noob and don’t know what to listen for. I mainly looked for gritty, thick sounds for the top of the growl and just midrange power when making it.
Hmm… I never really got external filtering down. I used massive and ableton.
The growl you did in serum is awesome…care to explain how you did it. I’ve been struggling with serum recently.
For sure.
It’s a lot honestly. The source sound (in Serum) came from a wavetable I made by importing a percussion sample into it. Although the wavetable isn’t all that important, a wave with nice harmonics will do the trick. It’s pretty neat though, I got lucky. Didn’t do any FM, the sound is basically just a single wavetable. Bend- for the ‘A Warp’ of course. The movement comes from the HP12 filter. This filter is awesome for getting that “wow” kinda sound for your growl to pronounce.
source - Clyp - This sound came directly from Serum, no post-processing at all… it had a lot of potential even at this point. There’s this guideline I repeat in my head a lot: put shit in, get shit out haha. Just means that an awesome sound can come out of a good/potential patch.
This is my effect chain/rack though.
The Saturator and Overdrive was used for the high end of the growl, this is where that gritty texture on the top of the growl comes from. I used the Saturator and enabled the “Color” thing on there to target that gritty frequency I was looking for and that gave it a little power. Overdrive is basically the same, I put that next to it to give (not only that gritty top end) the growl as a whole some power. The phaser gave it some character and thickened it up a bit.
OTT (the plugin by xFer records) really helped this sound though. I didn’t even touch the compressor much because I’m not all too well with multiband compression but it gave it a thicker and more powerful sound overall. OTT is a very useful plugin, I do believe it is free too so I would recommend picking that up if you haven’t.
The multiband compressor at the end is just an Ableton preset (Multiband Compression.adv) and I’m not sure what that does besides flatten the low end. Again, I’m not too fond of compressing in general. q:
That EQ at the end is just barely anything. It gives it a bit of character that I like. It’s just a sweeping resonance automation that goes from 0hz-250hz or something like that.
How are you using vocodex to get that squelchy mess? I’m clueless with that VST although I have it running in Ableton as well. I’ve never used it for growl sounds, mainly because I can’t make it do any good. You sound like you’ve extracted some wet/water-y textures from it though, I’m quite interested man.
If you haven’t already, I’d watch SeamlessR’s videos on youtube for this. Make the carrier and modulator the same thing, set the band width pretty high but not too high, and mess with the order buttons and number of bands. More bands + order and less band width multiplier equals squelch pretty much.
SeamlessR isn’t a good resource for me. He’s in FL and I’m in Ableton. It’s really difficult for me to follow tutorials where the tutor is using different software. I know that basically all his tutorials are the same vocodex b/s over and over but would you mind giving me a link to where I could watch something short and sweet? Haha.
http://www74.zippyshare.com/v/iuBIUTQb/file.html 2 hours worth of fucking around in FM8 in ableton.
Heeeeeey man! This is kpftw :D.
Really cool growl, would you mind giving some details on the patch or processing? It has an excellent timbre.
Not Bad…but…
That one sounds maybe more Skrillexy …
I think mine is closer, I think I was going for the First Of The Year type growl.
Closer…? than what ?? …Skrillex made a lot of different growl basses…you named your file "BEST SKRILLEX GROWL EVER "…
Taste it
Why are people still trying to make skrillex growls… Its 2015 not 2011… smh
Maybe cause he made the best ones…often imitated but never equaled …even in 2015…
Damn, that’s pretty close. - It just needs a bit more beef and crunch to it!
