The Original Growl Bass Thread (Official)

Its all Jaymac…he did such amazing work with his remake. We need him on this thread!

Unfortunately Jaymac is on an indefinite hiatus from music, he’s focusing on his university studies and has no time for music anymore.

Yeah that sucks…you do what you need to do though I guess.

awesome tutorial bro <3

I fixed it up a bit to get rid of some of that harsh top end…also added a sub bass part…I think it is sounding pretty solid now.

Lol I wish I knew FM8 well. That’s an awesome sound. Could you show/describe the patch any? I’m lousy with that plugin. Any details about that sound would be great though.

I made a noise, any tips to get more movement? It sorta sounds like an exhaust pipe lol. I would use the sound how it is now in a track tho.

Pretty dope! Maybe try to automate a high pass filter to get it talking

That doesn’t work very well, I’ve tried.

Try adding a bandreject filter in the low parts of the main spectrum of the sound, and some multiband compression to give it a “shape”

What about phaser? Or vowel EQ movement ?

One day I’ll pull off a Skrillex growl, I feel like I’m just missing one or two more things…

Thanks guys! This was actually my first attempt at a growl with FM8.

I think the key to FM8 is ‘less is more’, I avoided making a base sound with overbearing highs like most people usually make, because Skrillex’s growls are “smooth” and I tried to do that with the core of the sound before anything else. I think the reason most FM8 growls have such high-end is people associate that with the vowel of the growl, don’t stress. Focus on a clean and smooth sound before anything else (The vowel comes later). Things like 8th/10th formant wavetables are definitely out of the question because they bring so much resonance and high end that your sound just turns to shit.

Before any distortion or vocoding etc, I have 3 different plugins shaping the vowel: Fliterscape2 to modulate between two vowel EQ’s, FabFilter Pro-Q to further exaggerate the vowel, and then WOW Filter with almost no wet or drive, it’s literally only there to clean and shape the vowel just a little bit more.

Then the rest is pretty basic, phaser, distortion, compression.
HIGH PASS FILTER AKA THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, IF YOU PUT A HIGH PASS ON YOUR GROWL AND IT SOUNDS LIKE SHIT JUST START AGAIN BECAUSE THERE’S NO SAVING IT. START THE SOUND AGAIN OR YOUR EFFECTS CHAIN.

Here’s my chain

edit:
Also note, don’t just copy my chain, because it’s subjective. Every growl/bass is different and requires different processing. It’s there to just kind of give the jist on how to approach it. You certainly don’t need everything I have. I probably even have things there unnecessarily.

I distorted them a bit more I think they sound much better now <3 https://clyp.it/cjtuhjmh
